July is one of the cloudiest times. I'll be there this year for the annular eclipse in early oct and am hoping to get at least two clearish nights for some astrophotography! Seems like a very cloudy island

Unfortunately they are pretty rare for any particular place on Earth. You have to go to an eclipse. Unless you are lucky, you will never see one if you wait for one to come to you.

Can you see this with the naked eye or there was some processing to make it pop out more. I am deciding whether to take a sunset or sunrise tour
@DaveKodama
@DaveKodama Год назад
There is some processing involved, but not too much to enhance contrast. At 3000 meters elevation, the sky can be very transparent, and if you allow 30 minutes for your eyes to become adjusted to darkness, you should be able to see much of what the camera captured. Check the sky in a planetarium program to make sure the Milky Way will be up, and be sure to wear warm clothes. There is often a steady breeze blowing all night.

great timelapse... was that lens flare at 1:05?
@DaveKodama
@DaveKodama Год назад
Yes, lots of lens flare. An unfortunate reality when a very bright object is in the field. As well, there are lots of airplanes and satellites and liess obvious, around a dozen Geminid meteors.

Wonderfull video ! Mate it is possible to guide with equivalent focal lenght = 4000 mm ? I keep solar animation with my 80/480 apo, Daystar Quark Prominance (Barlow inside 4.2 x) and a Televue Barlow 2x: the result is quite 4000 mm. Thx a lot Carlo Casoli
@davidkodama3180
@davidkodama3180 2 года назад
I believe that guiding on the edges of the disk essentially averages out the seeing, so guiding should be pretty good even for a long focal length. The exception would be near the horizon where the sun would flatten quite a lot, but of course seeing is generally so bad near the horizon that imaging at a long focal length is hard to do anyway. Ultimately the answer to the question of whether or not it would work for 4000mm focal length depends on the size of your sensor too.

Launched on my birthday a nice gift. My wife called me outside as I was watching inside the launch on my phone. We in the Bahamas saw quite a light show as the stage separation took place leaving a big cloud of gas to be light up by the sun still shining in the upper atmosphere then the ship looked like a comet in the sky. Got some nice pic from others and my wife got one. Been sharing but can not attach here I see.

Returning in 2024 for the Annular Solar Eclipse?
@DaveKodama

Probably not. I'm putting my effort into seeing the total eclipse in the U.S. in April 2024. But if you want an excuse to visit Easter Island, that's a good idea.

HI, thanks for the video. I would like to know if the calibration is done only once or if changing the area of the sun must be done every time, thanks
@davidkodama3180
@davidkodama3180 3 года назад
Calibration for the mount only needs to be done once, and can be stored away so you never need to do it again if you use the same mount and drive speed. If you have a German equatorial mount that needs a meridian flip, then you need to calibrate once more on that side, then store that away. Later when you start up again, just recall the appropriate calibration and you should be ready to go.
