I would love to know what toots said into jacos ear. I would like to think it was something like ...' this is the dogs bollocks'. Pure joy from toots when the band kicks in. He knew this was the work of a genius.
Why are there people who visit this planet for just a little while, share all kinds of sublime art with us, and then go away too soon? Whether they choose to leave, or are taken from us, there always seem to be more questions than answers when they disappear. Van Gogh. John Lennon. Jimi Hendrix, Jaco, Karen Carpenter(listen to her drumming, not her pop songs) etc.
Who's the bass clarinet player there? Love how buzzy his tone is, especially in the high register. When he comes in on the solo, it almost sounds like a tenor mixed with a wind-synth, love it! I'd love to check out any other recordings he's on.
Who would ever have attempted Donna Lee on bass.....this is fantastic, Jaco always stood out for his great jazz harmony, of course technique, and his slippery slide fretless bass sound.....a real legend and hero
This bass solo absolutely sucks. And the way JP attacks every note makes the sound way too staccato. Can be a matter of taste but this is not jazz to my ears. I guess there'll come a time when JP will be regarded as an overrated bass player.
So many influenced by them. Oteil Burbridge from the Allmans and Dead and Co, said this band changed his path, and turned him onto to being a bass player- yes, and we are all the beterr for it!😃
geez, Bob Mintzer's solo is damn crazy. This kind of instrumental set, just bass and percussion, gives the player a freer harmonic space to wander arround chromaticaly and Mintzer have some fascinating chromatic ideas here.
I love this number. But it has to be said: if you are impressed with the technique, you should listen to Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen (NHØP) & Joe Pass. No competition of course. But HNØP`s version on his upright is just stunning; like this one, though in a different way :)
I wish Jaco would have collaborated with Frank Zappa at some point - I can't even imagine what a project would look like with those two minds interfacing 👽🌈🌈🌈
