The best mechanism on the internet. I must have looked at a dozen options and thought up a dozen more, but this one was it. Cheers for the share. Now, if only mine had come out as elegant lol.
I assume you have found them already but for people who see this and have the same question: I just bought a snare for a snare drum and cut it in half for this.
Could you make a cajon with a washboard front instead of a drum skin on the front? A Washboard Cajon .... Listen to this Washboard Player... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LVOT8OBHMhc.html

Steve, I did this mod on 2 cajons I built. I appreciate the simplicity and great functionality. Here's my mods. You may note that this Cajon uses much thinner plywood, with a hardwood internal frame. This cuts the weight down and I believe it improves the sound. m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10218476813976615&id=1382637335
I did your mechanism and it came out great. I had purchased a cajón 2 years ago with no snare. It was not an option. So I added one using your method. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Wei T it makes a difference how close to the top of the drum the end of the snares reach.... and yes the length also affects it. Shorter is a more milder sound, and too long can make the snares rattle too much... depends what you're looking for in sound.
Little suggestion. Maybe put a piece of leather or rubber on the bar that stops the snare so it doesn't make a noise when you shut it off don't want that sound to be part of the performance lol I like the simplicity of the shut off though right in the front you don't even have to think about it just on or off in the middle of playing. I love it
I noticed that the screws on the skin don't go all the way to the top. Does the lack of screws all the way around help the sound? Thanks for the video!
Hey Rick Ivey ! yeh the top screws are left out so the corners of the skin will stick up a bit. That way when you hit the top it gives it a nice ‘slap/snap’ when you play ;)
This is an awesome mechanism Steve, certainly the most simplistic and convenient way to switch while playing. What is the hardware that it used for dowel tightening adjustment?
Steve, Love the video and ideas. Best on the web for sure. Is it my depth perception issues or is your box deeper than the width? Looks more rectangular than square? Or is it me?
