The Mission 100 comes with the dashboard storage piece, which is exclusive to this model. If you mean up by the bow, its an aftermarket cooler storage bag I added on.
Gary, I like how you tricked out your boat. I'd like to do something similar but can't find some of the items you have. First...those line guides. Where did you get them? Then the working deck. I couldn't find that on Pelicans site. You said it might be from somewhere else, but I couldn't make out what you said.
I have a follow-on question. You never mentioned the handles you added to your kayak. How did you attach them? Tri-fold rivets? Bolt/Washer/Nut thing? Rubber Expansion plug?
Nice review Gary.... I just tried my new Mission 100 yesterday - my very first time on the water in a kayak! It was fun. I'm 280 so I was afraid it would be tippy, but it's not bad at all! It's just more demanding to bend down and get into/out of the kayak, compared to a younger or slimmer person, but hey... I just take my time, it's all good. I was anxious attaching it to the roof of my sedan, but I can do it by myself easily. The provided straps work fine too. Enjoy your summer and be safe on the water!
I grew up in Washington State in the 70’s/80’s. Hydro racing was huge most Washingtonians during those decades. I was a big Squire Shop fan. Loved that sport.
Thank you! Looking forward to take it mine out today. I was not aware of pads for the oar, got gloves for my grip, but can see I'll be looking for pads in my future. List anything else your wife finds convenient. Nice to have another perspective. Cheers.
Nice mods. What product do you use to seal any holes you drilled for the bungie holders and rod holders? I'm going to pick up two of these kayaks tonight and I'll probably end up doing some similar mods. I'm pretty excited about upgrading from cheap inflatables to this.
Just bought at $299 at local Costco. It’s my first hard-body kayak- we have an inflatable that we took out a few times last year, and decided to upgrade on a budget. Question: I notice you didn’t mention the foam inserts that are slotted into the side of the seat area. I accidentally removed them, believing them to be packaging components intended to keep the plastic from becoming deformed during shipping. However, their website states that they are used instead as extra flotation, supposedly to prevent sinking in the event that the kayak’s cockpit takes on excessive water/boat capsizes. I quickly replaced the foam inserts that I had thrown away minutes before, but they were a bit torn up from trying to remove them - now they are not quite as “in there”, though still snug. Minor research states that they are important for safety reasons, and should not be removed. 1) Should I replace the slightly scuffed-up foam, or should I leave it as is? 2) If I don’t replace it, will a “snug” fit be enough to keep it in place? If (for some reason) it migrates towards the back of the kayak, will that harm the stability of the kayak? (i.e. too much flotation at the back) 3) If I do replace the foam, should I purchase an identical replacement off the Pelican website? Or is a third-party option better? Recommendations? 4) Some forums say that the foam gets a bit moldy after a while. Is that an indication to replace them? Is foam replacement a common practice? For context: size: 5’9” male, 170lbs intended location(s): lakes, (maybe)bays water choppiness: low-moderate Thanks! EDIT: Also should mention that this kayak is strictly recreational use, to be used seasonally (May thru September), used twice a month, no modifications, no fishing, and I am not planning to upgrade again anytime soon, nor is a main hobby of mine-therefore, no need to consider any “hardcore” sport behavior (e.g. kayak rolling tricks, mods, etc.) I am only getting out onto the calmer water and paddling around for a feeling of relaxed bliss, and intending to be a safe as possible while doing so. Im a great swimmer, wear a life jacket, and stay within 1/8 mile of land at all times.
I would suggest you try to exchange the kayak at Costco for another, or purchase replacement foam from Pelican directly. Best option is to exchange it though at this point.
I first saw Barney Armstrong in about 1967 or 68 fronting a band called Ralph, at the time they were back-up band for Merilee Rush....this was the very first teen dance I was allowed to go to and watching Merilee sing, I told myself that's what I wanted to do when I got out of school. A dream realized and worked in bands for over 20 years...
I work on the boat these days wishing I could have been a fly on the wall back then when it was first built. These videos make that possible. Thanks for posting them Gary.

Had breakfast next to his table when I was 14 years old at the Edgewater hotel in Seattle. He was in his beautiful white Atlas uniform and his dirty old boots. I got half of his autograph. My pencil broke. Of course... Man I miss those Muncey/Chenoweth battles. Didn't get any better than that.
