I'm Susan Clifton and I live in Pompano Beach, Florida. I recently moved my art studio Wilton Manors. I attended Philadelphia College of Art to study painting but was fortunate to work in the commercial world of Fashion advertising for most of my career. I started doing web design in 1996 and still run a web design firm to this day.
In 2020 I decided to start a RU-vid channel to document my exploration of new art materials. At least new to me. Gel printing and collage quickly became a focus. This new focus is helping me evolve my work.
I was an Artist in Residence at the (BaCA) Bailey Contemporary Arts Center in Pompano Beach for 4 years. It was a wonderful experience and I continue to miss being part of that community. My new studio is a bit small and I have ambitions to move into a larger studio as my art business progresses.
Wow, it is a perfect video for me. I bought me a gelli plate but it didn’t work for me. Thanks you for your clear instructions! Greetings from the Netherlands ❤
I like to use three ring binders. The medium size, not school binders. This way I can take the pages out and put them back when they are finished. Sometimes large book papers folded in half. Bound together with elastic bands. Same thing, removable and you can use different sizes in the same journal also. God bless
I typically cut 4x4 squares, but as soon as I saw this video I ordered the 5.5x5.5 bookie you're working in! Brilliant. Keeps everything together. Thanks for your inspiring content. I love your channel.
Greetings from Victoria, Australia. Thank you Susan!! This is the video I have been waiting for. I am inspired and keen to pursue this lovely craft further. In part due to your clear, concise and very interesting tutorial. Thank you.
You helped me!!! Thank you! Your rolling technique (picking up each time) and what you said about feeling the temp of the paper - I haven't heard anyone else mention those things. My first plate arrived today and I get to play with it all day tomorrow. YAY!
Thank you for sharing.. love watching people work! Interesting watching your idea come to life. Binder medium is what is made to seal your supports before painting…and a tannin blocker is good for wood to stop tannins coming through. Interesting that you like a dark background, the white gesso allows for more luminosity to come through when using Acrylic paint. But what is great about art… there are no rules that can’t be broken…only experiments. Also if you spray your Mylar stencils and leave them till the paint dissolves a bit, then brayer over them to transfer that paint onto your art work… gives a great distressed look…so much fun…Cheers
I’m just starting out on the journey, Susan and endeavouring to break in my new plates but, instead of a lacy effect, I’m getting lines (from the brayer?).
Try a lighter touch on the brayer and don't go back and forth. Lift off the plate and go in one direction at a time. I think you may be applying too much pressure.
Oh my, what a joy to watch you pull those amazing prints, I can’t run out and buy rubber bands its evening and shop are closed!! But I will definitely be trying this tomorrow. Thank you Susan, I really liked the jazz music 😊
Thank you so much for sharing this. I am new to gel printing and, so far, not produced anything I'm satisfied with. You've shown me some of the mistakes I'm making and given me even more reasons to persevere 😊
I don't use tissue all that much. Deli paper is a lot more transparent. I haven't tried the wet strength yet so I can't compare with it. Have you tried that?
@@SusanCliftonArtist I have printed with the wet strength tissue but have not used it in a collage. It definitely is strong. I haven’t used it in a collage yet as I am new and still making papers!!
Thanks for the feedback. I will keep that in mind. Unfortunately I used these papers for a video I posted to Patreon. So they are gone already. But I will try to create more collage videos soon.
Hi Susan, quick question I have a neat design on gell plate and have let it dry. Can I roll some gloss medium on it put the paper down and do a pull an hour or so later ?
I see water sparkles, reeds, grasses, ponds... This was great! Here's me rushing out to the store to buy rubber bands! Thank you very much for the video! The music was perfect, BTW, upbeat and happy.
The oils in the plate. If you store the plate with copy paper on both sides it will remove some of the surface oils and that should help. Also some very thin transparent colors want to lace more than the opaque colors.
