i love 'balaphones' but good lord i hadn't heard 'marimbas' until today and it is just magical. i went to the zoo recently and there were a couple of outdoor percussion instruments to play around with in this little area, one a xylophone-like instrument. it was a lot of fun to just bang on it with the mallets. oingo boingo sparked a bit of interest regarding these types of percussion instruments, and I think that experience helped to ignite it. i'm going to be getting a glockenspiel soon, mainly because anything in the xylophone family is way out of my budget, but i figure it'll be a good starting point anyhow. thanks zoo, thanks oingo boingo!
