Of all the Laura Kolb shared videos of Carl and the group, this is (so far) my favorite. It's so soulful. This is like finding gold. Thanks again for posting Laura.
These are some of the best examples of Carl's playing available. The whole quartet is fantastic. I could listen to these for hours. Thank you so much for sharing. You are a blessing!
Benny IS from heaven here! Bubba, Moody - everyone is at their swinging, spontaneous best on this classic rendition of Pennies From Heaven. I love the live, exciting feeling of this!
I saw this my freshman year of high school around 6 years ago when I first started trombone. This is one of the recordings that has really inspired me to keep playing through some of the toughest years of my life. Without this hobby of mine I don't know where I'd be. Thank you so much Urbie for your beautiful and inspirational playing.
So glad to know it helped you. We had Urbie at the Village Lounge at DisneyWorld for 2 week stays, almost every year. He was always amazing. Everything was easy for him :):)
Thanks, Laura. If you have any more recordings of Bubba playing, I'd love to hear it - Bubba was my very favorite piano player to play with back in those Dallas days & nites!
Frank "Bubba" Kolb was also a great (bass) trombone player too. When I met him, he was just coming off the Harry James band in Vegas, at about age 20, I believe.
@@laurakolb Thanks, Laura - yeah, I noticed several postings of Bubba's music right after I asked you to post more. Tell Bubba I said hello with fond memories, ~Dave Reynolds
I remember in high school when Maynard Ferguson was playing at Disney World, and Clark Terry was playing at the Village Lounge. We asked our band director which show we should see. He said "I know who I'd see" (meaning go see Clark Terry). We ended up seeing both. The Village Lounge was a very, very special place.
Very honestly, the village lounge was the best jazz bar ever. The Bubba Kolb Trio was excellent and amazing artists all the time. I went there too many times to count when I was in high school -- always a great time and great music.
These recordings captured so many players at their most relaxed. One can really feel the atmosphere in the room as they laid it down. Here, Carl, runs all the changes but never loses the feeling of the song. Hats off also to the amazing trio and Bubba Kolb on piano! Thanks, Laura!
This is a great example of Urbie showing off, as only Urbie can. But even when he is called to reorder his priorities (as he seldom did), and work towards virtuosic display as a goal in and of itself, as was the case in this instance, he can’t help but make music enroute. That rare gift is his alone amongst commercial trombonists. Urbie is not a trombonist, he is a musician; rare as they are. Trombonists have instrumental limitations and expectations set upon their performances, but none are conjured to mind when listening to Urbie playing. There is just an outpouring of music, free of obligation or imposition. It is of only secondary importance that Urbie is the greatest trombonist ever (and I include orchestral players in this category too), and the best ballad player too. More profoundly, I declare him to be, for his unswerving dedication to the music, one of the greatest ‘musicians’ ever.
I saw Urbie at that same club in '83. Played his a#* off. And he was so cool, came and sat on his breaks with all the college age Bone players who were there to hear him. My Man!!!
