I'll always call it San Diego Stadium. I was there for some historic things: I saw Lou Brock tie and break Ty Cobb's stolen base record. I was at the Holy Roller game. I was at the first Holiday Bowl. I was there to welcome the Chargers back when they beat Pittsburgh, to win the AFC. Breaks my heart to have had the Chargers move to LA. Spanos is the worst thing to ever happen to sports in San Diego
Witnessed Willie Mays pop a line drive HR there in 1969. Countless concerts including the Stones, Pink Floyd, the Who and others. Chargers vs Raiders, Padres vs a lot. Motocross and Monster truck events. God Bless the memories of good ole Jack Murphy stadium!
ESPN rated SD Qualcomm stadium #1 NFL game venue in the 90's. I was a proud SD Charger season ticket holder back then & NFL games thare seemed magical.
When I was a little kid my dad would take me bluegill fishing in the ponds that used to be in that unique wild area, before they turned it into that stadium. Too bad they didn't preserve that land.
I was lucky enough to work in the stadium as a teen and young adult. I met many pro players there amongst them Johnny Unitas. I got to shake his hand and watch him warm up before games. There are a lot of names on my list of players I got to talk to and shake hands as a kid. I would always get there early and go down in the field and shag balls for the kickers and punters. Ray Guy, George Blanda to name a few and of course from our kickers and punters too. Rolf Benirske... Many times I met and talked to Dan Fouts, I worked in construlayer on and worked with one of the guys who blocked for him in Oregon. Once when I was watching practice I told Dan his buddy worked on the same job I did and he asked where it was and lo and behold one day he showed up to see his Oregon teammate. It was cool. Well the last time I was at the “Murph” I took my wife to her first pro football game there. It was the Chargers vs the dreaded Raiders. Chargers won big time and it was fun to watch her enjoy the game. I’ll miss the Murph and all the dear memories it holds for me it was part of my youth and spent so many years watching games there.
Living in Detroit my whole life,I remember seeing so many great games at the Murph! It seems the Chargers had a pretty competitive team for many years and after watching the Lions at 1:00pm the 4:00pm game a lot of the time was the chargers playing another classic game at the Murph. Just a classic stadium and I wish I could have made it there one time.
The Padres and Chargers both won divisional championship titles. Both teams made it respectively to the World Series and the Super Bowl. Jack Murphy Stadium holds many records that will never be broken. It also holds many memories that can never be erased. It was beyond unique in its design and is nostalgic beyond belief to those who experienced the magic that was performed there. Long live the memory of the Murph! You will rise again and someday, the Chargers will come home!
I use to live in downtown SD on and off for 5 years. I drove by here all the time on 15. I saw they were building a new complex out there when I left. It looked pretty impressive. I miss SD so much...
A guy I saw play against my high school for about 4 years played in that stadium. Natrone Means RB His high school was in our conference. We beat him 3 out 4 times but that one time I'll never forget. He broke loose for a 75 yard TD run and we lost as the clock ran out.
Only God knows how many Padres games I used to go watch there, and I live in Los Angeles. I remembered there was A Shopping Mall to the West of that Stadium on Friars Road. Is that Mall still there? Easy to get there. Right where Interstates 15 and 8 come together. You can see it from Interstate 15 as you’re driving by.
Going to miss this stadium. I miss the San Diego Chargers. I miss the feeling of electricity in the air. The countless fly overs, and that cannon roaring every time we scored. I will tell my kids one day about the days when I was their age. These moments I will always cherish. And I pray for a day where my Chargers return back home where they belong.
Wow as I’m watching this my brother just called to tell me Padres Musgrave just threw a no hitter, first one in Padres History. I lived at the Murph, sports concerts sky shows. Goodbye old friend you will be missed.
I saw my first major league game in San Diego Stadium in 1969. Tha Padres were new, too. I got Frank Reberger's autograph and then spent many evenings and weekend days in the 1970s with a cooler full of beer occupying a $1.50 General Admission seat out in center field.
I drove by the other day...sad... to think our city has nothing after all these years. I hope the Padres can do something, but to see the Murph gone is pretty horrible.
I spent Many a Saturday night there(GO Aztecs!) and a few Sundays. The Sky Shows are unforgettable. Sad to see her go away, but looking forward the the new Aztec Stadium.
I only got there once Dec 20 2009. My wife and kids took me there for my dream trip on my 40th birthday. 2500 mile trip to see the Chargers beat the Bengals.
What a waste!! Should of kept it. I was trying to make it down there 1 last time to see it before it got demolished. Thanks for the memories!!! Tony and Jr are turning in their graves 💔😞
Sorry. But you are incorrect. Even though the Padres didn’t win a World Series, they did win the NL championship in Jack Murphy stadium in 84 and the other when it was named Qualcomm. I should know... I was there for both celebrations. Thank you.
The best celebration was during the 1994-95 football season after the then san diego beat pittsburgh to advance to their one and only super bowl. Fans were in every aisle and was the biggest crowd in the history of that stadium. Also, the fans stormed the field during that celebration. I estimate between 70 and 80 thousand that day. The biggest high schools stadiums are Vista and Mt. Carmel high schools
On my birthday yesterday my lady surprised me with two seats from the Murph. The best gift a Die Hard Chargers fan could ever receive. Those seats will go with the Final Chargers game played game tickets I have ( season tickets ) to frame. Thank you for all the memories, Good or bad
Both Fenway Park and Wrigley Field are over 100 years old. Lights were finally installed at Wrigley Field in 1988 despite public opposition to altering the original structure. You can add San Diego to the list of cities that have no sense of nostalgia or history.
Too bad the Chargers thought they were too good for a new stadium right next to the old one. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_OSC-rXed-I.html
@@pringlemanzzz "But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition" (1st Timothy 6:9, KJV). An even worse example was Walter O'Malley. When he moved the Dodgers from Brooklyn to Los Angeles, he was scouting locations to build a new baseball stadium. (L.A. Coliseum was used as a temporary facility, but it was too small for baseball.) O'Malley and the mayor flew around in a helicopter and the mayor invited him to pick any plot of ground. O'Malley pointed at Chavez Ravine and said, "How about that one?" The mayor answered, "Okay." Of course, neither of them cared that the land was already occupied by a thriving Latino community, with houses, schools and businesses. The city of Los Angeles cruelly evicted the people from their land, gave it to O'Malley, and up went Dodger Stadium.
I’ve been there too many times to count. The first time was 1987 when the Padres beat the Dodgers with a homer in the 9th. I was there in 98 for the playoffs. I was there in 98 for the Super Bowl. I was there in 95 when the Chargers came home after beating the Steelers to go to the Super Bowl. Watching it come down breaks my heart. I left San Diego which has left a hole in my heart after Tony and Junior both died. This I guess is right on par for the course.
I was fortunate to attend high school games ( the Holy Bowl between usdhs and St. Augustine) at then balboa stadium which was torn down for earthquake reasons. It was sad to see the ground level and historic endzone colums removed where San diego high plays home football games now.
