The reboot is boring and ugly to look at. Both could be subjective opinions but i stick to them. A manga or comic book isn't a movie nor is it fully animated or filmed show. Directly copying a book or manga doesn't translate to a good show. Moving images are something drastically different from a still image on a piece of paper.
This. This is something that nobody in the anime community takes into account when they ask for faithful adaptations. A manga is different from an anime, so the anime will have to make changes in order for it to work in the new medium. The art will have to look a bit different, the story will have to be changed, at least a little bit, in order to flow correctly.

So far i agree with you. I wonder Is the manga good? I don't wanna be dissapointed like i was with Shaman King source material, i've watched both animes and i wanna know if the original story holds up because the remake did a poorly job to present me the characters and plot.
I personally didn't enjoy the manga too much, but I did like it more than the new anime and I can see the charm in it. The artwork is nice and the comedy is a lot better at least.
Personally I'll steer clear of the manga for the reasons of the author. At least both anime were adapted by different people. I don't feel comfortable reading the original now.
I pretty much agree. The excessive exposition, bland perspective angles and the still frame poweropoints are part of the reason i haven't kept up with reboot. This kinda feels like a checklist of subplots vs. an actual npassion project. At this point I kinda just want to see how the climax of the Kyoto arc will be handled and to see the Jinchu arc animated. Even then I'm probably won't be impressed considering how underwhelming the clicps i've seen of the Saito fight was in comparision to it's 90's counterpart.
the way an adaptation which does good is HXH 2011 which captures all of the characters like the original, unlike these new versions including Shaman King that puts too much attention to the action, main character and it's dailog
With Hunter x Hunter, like with Fullmetal Alchemist, I'll still say the original adaptation is better, but both remakes are still great productions despite not hitting the highs of the originals. They do their job in adapting the unadapted chapters mostly well, making some mistakes in already adapted portions. Shaman King remake is mediocre, as it clearly only exists as a launching point for Shaman king Flowers adaptation. This looks straight up bad, not awful but pretty boring. I don't know if I care to see the unadapted chapters in this style. I'd even say the Jojo part 3 ova is much better than the modern adaptation in parts it does adapt, but that one is so abridged that even if some parts are worse the modern version wins for not skipping some of the best parts of the manga. If the ova series was longer, it would have won no competition.
the old version focuses on the story and the progression of the characters, the new one focuses on th how the characters currently are and shocking value and cuts the main point. I haven't seen the new version yet, but based on what you said it sounds like it
Once again, thank you so much for this series. It's remarkable how much of a letdown this remake is and how it was able to feel so much worse than the original anime. Even ignoring the fact that they screwed up characters, scenes, and moments, the visual presentation of the show is just incredibly dull on it's own. I've yet to see a clip comparison where I prefer the newer take. Funny how Rurouni Kenshin is by far my favorite anime/story of all time, and yet if my first experience with the series had been this remake I probably would have just dropped it after a few episodes because of how uninteresting it is.
@thewanderingsamurai1150 it's just like Shaman King 2021, the characters are out of character, pacing is dull, presentation is very cheap, the old anime of both series feels more like a true adaptation of the manga than the remakes themselves

I always saw this mini-arc a little uneven, i mean after Jinei, Tokyo Arc kind of falls flat (except for the Oniwabanshu fight) until the Kyoto Arc. Ironically despite the remake cutting the filler the pacing feels a lot more tedious than the 90s anime and manga. Just like Shaman King 2021 is boring and dull for only being a copy paste of the manga but worse.
@@soul8648 thank you! I loved the 90s fillers and certain episodes actually added development. Not to mention that by the time the Kyoto arc rolled around it feels like we’ve lived with the characters more.
I loved the main villain in Brotherhood. But that's it. I was 14 when the 2003 version came out and I haven't watched it since. But 03 is just more memorable to me. Rather than Brotherhood. Which I've watched multiple times. 03 had a beautiful introduction. Nina and Hughes death was handled so well. It was so gut wrenching. The music from the first series is just so memorable. I also prefer Rose's character design and Al's voice in 03 😂
The origional is for adults and brotherhood is for anime kids. The focus on serious issues vs the 20 episode lingering on the capital attack hype to show off greed and bradley.
As a VN player, I found it to be heavily flawed, but there was pioneer level work at times and real vision. Zero is more of using the advantage of a built world and pour your own ingenuity into it. Well the adaptation strategy is lowkey a mess anyway, and that's why these days I barely mingle with the Fate community...
I think the reason the ending doesn't make sense to a lot of people is because they watched it the first time, didn't like the ending, so they refused to rewatch it. If they did then they would actually see how much the ending was foreshadowed.
I definitely prefer brotherhood more, but your points are valid. Brotherhood happens to be a top 3 anime for me. 2003 easily makes my top 10 and I dislike the crap people fling its way when it is such an awesome show!!
I think what is most sad about the 03 vs brotherhood debacle is that for a long time 03 was considered one of, if not the best anime ever made. That was the consensus back then in the 00s from what I remember. And 03 regularly ranked #1 on MAL. After Brotherhood, 03 literally got review bombed by the more childish fans of brotherhood, I think it might not even be in the top 100 on MAL now. Why shit on another show just because another adaptation came out? I just don't understand how this show went from universally praised to being considered a trashy filler adaptation. It makes no sense, and the show has become relegated to obscurity, never to be recommended to anyone. I will always appreciate this show as one of the most mature works of art ever put to a screen, it's simply incredible.

I just feel reboot is cool in graphics but... Freaking boring at the rest. Literally few background soundtracks, lack of humour (or lazy tries to express it). Even HD fights won't make it better, there is no atmosphere we could feel in the OG.
This is such a good series in it's own right. I would love to just transplant a lot of the start into the beginning into Brotherhood. I love Edward's growth in 03 as the slower pace really sees him move from a kid and grow into an adult. With a lot of the brilliance coming from the pacing. The filler that came from the Light Novels were great breather episodes that stopped the plot because a show like this hits really hard but also gives time to introduce characters so that they have a stronger impact, like Hughes. I've rewatched this version of the show more times than I have for most of the animes I have seen. The parts with Nina and Alexander, Hughes, the armour brothers from lab 5 all hit hard every time I see it.
Honestly, i agree with everything you’ve pointed out, but the real deal breaker for me is the new artstyle. Holo looks so… soft. It’s such a generic artstyle that imo doesn’t fit a story like this. Her new wolf form literally looks like a shiba inu, I can’t do this 😭😭
03 it's sooooo good, the stand alone episodes are brilliant, the show make us feel uneasy, creepy and laugh it's such brilliant work The scene where gluttony eats dante has been haunting me ever since i saw it was a kid to this day
I strongly disagree the new anime is better than the 90 anime the animation better the voice acting much better.Comedy doesn’t fit this anime its an action drama.
An action drama can still have comedy in it and thinking that's not the case is pretty silly to me. The animation in the new version is blinding and messy, the voice acting is stilted, but that's just my opinion. Also your logic means the new rurouni kenshin is also bad since it also has comedy in it, not good comedy, but still comedy. If it's an action drama, then that kind of thing doesn't fit the show.
Brotherhood is not better. In fact, the beginning of the show runs on the assumption that a lot of people saw FMA 2003. And how many of us watched Brotherhood because of FMA 2003? I know I wouldn’t have cared if I wasn’t hooked by the 2003 show.
This is interesting. I'm British, and I didn't really get Urusei Yatsura until I saw those British dubbed episodes. The joke you criticised for having no build up actually really made me cackle. It's much closer to British humour in that execution than American. Obviously both are actually Japanese humour. And I do like both. But I do prefer the reboot. I found the joke delivery hit me harder and I wonder if that's because of my nationality. I noticed US media has a lot of set up and explanation with their jokes!
I'm actually watching Brotherhood for the first time. Sadly, I forgot everything from 2003, since I've only seen it once, but it was awesome, I know that much.
Although the original was more charming and better written, the remake has better animation and art, bringing it to modern day anime standards. Either way, i was happy to watch the remake just because i loved the OG and have forgotten most of it after all these years.
it was the music and direction of the 1996 anime that really floored me. it has so much energy and emotion. the scene when Koaru realizes Kenshin had already left. the direction and music made the scene incredibly sad.

Are we talking about the original dubbed '96 or the newer dubbed. Watched the original ones my friend sent from Japan and were later that year released in US on DVD. Wanted to watch with my son and found it on Disney plus and voices are different. Some of the words they use are different, like Battousai The Manslayer is now The Slasher. Kaoru is now Kori. Reverse blade sword is Reverse edge. AND that's only a little of episode one. I can't watch it. Too much of the change irks me. Need to get a dvd player so I can show him the true original.
I remember in France, the first episode of sun and moon was just after the Vulcanion movie, so with my brother we watched the movie and then, in a first time we laught like we never taught and in the second time we cry because of what was that shit we were looking at, passing from a "16 years old Ash" with beautiful graphics to the biggest piss dog shit we ever seen !!
I wanna say that the beginning of Brotherhood is an absolute slog but I also feel the last third of the show was very poorly handled. The pacing of Brotherhood is all over the place and the ending overall felt thrown together and not well thought out. The giant boss battle at the end was so boring and the alchemy made no sense.
As a history fan i really think all these historical referances are super cool. And imperial germany actually trying to invade the fma world is crazy. Also the ending with a cameo of hitler was crazy if i remember right
