Hello Everyone! I am Ken Buckman and here's my RU-vid Channel for viewing odds and ends of my railfanning since I began shooting video in 1986, to the present. Here you can also view promotional clips for Broken Knuckle Video Productions (BKVP) line of commercial railroad DVDs which I am the Producer of, and are now owned by Pentrex Video.
Con-gress Rail destroyed my love of trains. My favorite paint scheme and my favorite railroad was the Chessie System and it's sleeping kitty. But then Conrail came along. I recall Chessie actually liked railfans because we gave them positive and free advertisement. Then Conrail came along and they hated railrans. Conrail took the pride Chessie engineers had and one thing Chessie did was it kept the B&O, C&O , WM, SCL emblems on their units to pay tribute to those fallen railroads gone but not forgotten.
Actually Conrail was never involved in the take-over of The Chessie System. It was CSX that took all the railroads that you named. Then CSX took about 40 percent of Conrail while Norfolk Southern took the rest in 1999.
@@captainahab4325 I was OK with Conrail. It ran nearby and I have almost always had friendly interactions with workers. I think the mega-mergers, and then all the class ones becoming generic along with the graffiti made my interest decline. However there's still plenty of great shortlines and regional railroads with some decent power as well!
Thank you for doing an excellent job on this video 📹 👏. It also shows the incompetence of the New York State Canal Corporation for NOT RAISING THE FLOOD GATES!!! They had plenty of time to do this but instead chose not to. Little Falls is the highest vertical drop on the Canal and the water was ROARING down the rapids through town. To this day, at Amsterdam, the scars to the stone museum at the Canal park are still viable. Earlier this summer, with the threat storm moisture coming with heavy, heavy rains, the NYS Canal Corporation wised up and raised the flood control gates lowering the water in time. Somebody got a brain this time as when the rains came, so did the water. It's ashamed that CSX endured Millions of dollars for New York states incompetencey of the Canal Corporation but the damage done to it's infrastructure was alot more. Just goes to show incompetencey is rewarding. 😢😢
The blame was never really the focus after this, although everyone realized what the main reason was, including the people who made the poor decision not to open the locks. Perhaps the weather forecasting did not make it clear enough in advance, how much water the river was going to take on.
Your forgetting one thing. They didn't want all that water down in SH1THOLE SCHENECTADY. Don't want all their homes in the historic district flooded. You know USELESS LIBERALS hate the little guy. That's why CROOKED HILARY could only make it to COMMIE-HARIE. Yes I hate that SH1THOLE villiage also. Always crying poverty when they had the best tax base of the 3 viliages in the area. I live in Fort Plain, my basement flooded. It's the 2nd this house was flooded. I graduated from St Johnsville in 1983.
One thing I have learned over the years is to accept the reality that it's impossible to find music that someone isn't going to complain about. Finding royalty free music is tough enough as it is! I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. Certainly there was more interesting power back then!
Correct me if I'm wrong but well after the flooding and the damage to the Utica Branch in 2006, wasn't the line finally repaired only to have another flooding incident shut it down again?
@@KBuckyRailVideo That is correct. The FEMA funds didn’t allow for mitigation, line had to be restored to pre disaster state, then in 2011, 2016, and 2021 the line suffered washouts in the same areas. They finally have it open again for the whole 2 cars they moved in the last 5 years. It’d be nice to see 15 car trains going through Norwich again, some day.
I'd like to get thoughts on this event, mainly how it eventually destroyed what was left of Canajoharie, New York's economy when the long time Beech-Nut facility was forced to shut down and re-locate, essentially leaving the lost tax revenue to be absorbed by the residents. Also why didn't the demolition of the facility didn't even take place until early 2024? The closing of this historic landmark had an effect on other businesses in town as well, with several more shutting down relatively recently. Finally, it is theorized at the end of the video that the likely cause of the extensive damage was the failure to open the locks on the river in advance. When they all became clogged with debris, it was too late and impossible to open them. Each lock at that point acted like a dam. This is really more fact than theory. On at least two occasions since the 2006 flood, the lock system has been opened in advance of storms when heavy rainfall has been forecast - A lesson learned the hard way.
@@johnuhelski8613 I don't why I assumed "shots" meant video. I took a lot of slides until the mid 1980's but picked up a video camera for the first time in 1986 and although still shooting slides, became more focused on video. Take care!
Were the Clinchfield and L&N hoppers used in 1985 coal drags as well? I’ve just changed my modeling year to 1985 Chessie and I’d love to add some of Tangent’s Clinchfield and L&N coal hoppers to my consists.
Great video of days gone by. Standard cabs, paint schemes from a failed merger, no graffiti, boxcars from roads long gone, and a caboose. Thank you. More please.
Great project and great layout! I will, though, assert a privilege as a resident of a state where all 55 counties are Appalachian. It’s Appa-LATCH-un. Please and thank you.
I only have room for a 4x8 HO layout ... I already want to tear it down and build an L shape point to point, and I'm only half way done with the one I started ... SMH
It's all about using whatever space you have to create something that keeps you interested. My layouts up until this one didn't offer that. If you try an L-shape point-to-point layout, I suggest plenty of switching options. For me, that is an important feature. Thanks for the feedback!
That was unusual for me, but once I got started i was encouraged by the results and had more motivation. Besides it was winter and I was happy to fire up the wood stove in the basement on the weekends!
Thank you. That's not a bad kit, but my mistake on the first one I had was not painting it. Having patience was not my way! I will say now that I did it again, that even some interior painting is recommended if you are going to opt for open doors.
Thanks for sharing your MR journey! I enjoyed watching the 5-part origin story and am interested in seeing the rest of your completed layout. My first scenic HO layout I built with my best friend while in High School in my parents garage on a couple narrow work benches a local business was gettimg rid of. In college I did a small 2x4 (or maybe 2.5 wide?) N scale layout. 30 years later... this year I decided to buy some HO track, a new Atlas locomotive, and some used Athearn BB locomotives and railcars so I can run and display trains after all these years. Not sure where this will take me due to space constraints and RCs competing for my time and resources. It is fun to have trains again and a hobby I can do inside the house!
I really hope R&N stays independent and gen-2 exclusive for a long while, they're very quickly becoming one of the last places in the world you can hear six or more 645 motors chugging in run-8 up a hill. In a world obsessed with efficiency and mergers, R&N says "why fix what was never broken?" and still runs their railroad like it's 1992, and I absolutely love that about them.
Definitely! When the NRFF passed us at White Haven, somebody started a rumor that I was jumping up and down like a little kid! (I was) ;-) That has always been one of my favorite railfanning sounds.
Yes, Bowser. I don't recall if Bowser was a brand I had heard of when I did N-scale, but fortunately Atlas made those C628s. (DC and no sound of course)
Thank you! The image is from my current layout and even then, that shot was taken a few years ago. I'll be leading up to that as the series progresses.
@@KBuckyRailVideo Considering R&N has significant CNJ heritage, and the fact that 425 is already quite famous for her oddball blue scheme, I think having a one-off purple heritage unit is very on-brand for them. Especially contrasting with the obvious Reading inspired freight scheme, if you squint it almost looks like a CNJ leaser on an RDG lashup.
Great video! I am planning to railfan in NY and PA in upcomings weeks and I am very interested in NYS&W operations. Is there some regularity in the operations? Some train schedule? I am particularly interested in the Syracuse - Binghamton line and the street running in Utica. Thank you!
Thanks for the kind words! I am honestly not very familiar with NYS&W operations. This train was not a normal run. You may want to check out the "Railroading Rambler" channel.
