@Work Sharp: Nice new tool but im missing a cheaper modell with only the Motor and the Blade Grinding attachement. I do not need the Ken Onion standard grinder.
Good to see ya Ken! I got a kick out of the Castle nut story. I had an Archery shop in Killen Tx. back at the beginning of the Gulf war. I kept getting reports of hummers, bradleys, Abrams getting hit with RPG's. A communications officer was a customer nd and I set him down and give him my take on a cure. Using D2 or 154-cm to make a see thru cage around the vehicle that resembled a venetian blind on windows space fairly close would sherad the casing of the rpg round and render it useless. But at the same time easily seen thru by the crew. Well, he submitted my idea and in a few months they were all over vehicles over there. Never go any credit or even so much as a thank you. Never saw him again for that matter. A little like your story with Kershaw, I was taken in by the Loveless shop and they went so far as to design a logo for me for the Loveless authorized Loveless Connection Knives. A lot of higher end collectors didn't like it one bit. Mr. Bod didn't care. What they didn't know and we were keeping very quiet that I was being groomed to continue Loveless knives. Mr. Bob was burnt out and Jimbo was only able to work one day a week. Jim had a spare room and I was to live there and work the Loveless Shop on his other days off. Sadly, my Wife became very Ill with an incurable Genetic Disease and I could not move to Cali. and Texas took care of Her huge medical bills. They were in the 6 figures after only the first month and there was no end in sight. I feel terrible that I had to bow out of the Loveless plans. Very ashamed and feel guilty over it. Worse, the State made me close my shop doors saying that If I made money they would drop her care and I knew without it, shew would die rather quickly and painfully. Some of these fine dealers and collectors advised me to leave my Wife as they wanted the profits I could generate for them. What kind of man leaves family in their wors time in their life. Scared adn dying. A greedy coward! So we now live in near poverty, and I would make the same decision again. Now you know why I disappeared. Very few know. I learned that a few collector/dealers said I must of quit because The Loveless Knives didn't sell. Hell, when I shut the doors I ha over 10 years of orders on the books totaling a LOT of money. But I never did it for money. I made the Knives because I loved it! KnifeMaker/Forced into Retirement after over 47+ Years in the Craft and in association with the Original R.W. Loveless Shop
It’s not quite as idiot proof as I thought. Especially since the first time I tried it I was only willing to sharpen an old buck knife from when I was a kid and it never had an edge on it, and a few knives from Canadian tire. The factory edges didn’t have a consistent angle on any of them. That and I had no idea why but getting a full burr was completely impossible. I had no idea if I’d done too much, or not enough. I didn’t know if I was using too much or too little pressure, I didn’t want to strip the plastic nut on the v-clamp, so the knife moved around in it a little, and I had no idea if I had worked on one side of the knife more than the other. This is going to take some practice. I’m going to need to put my benchmades away until I figure this out on cheaper knives.
Im thinking of making a sheet metal platform to keep the knife horizontal. I can't see me keeping the knife horizontal moving it from the referance plate to belt.
Just received mine and I like the new mechanisms for speed control, continous run, belt change and angle dial. It is easier and more comfortable to use compared to Mk1. I do have questions though. Is there a guide for maintenance? Like how to clean the soft padding in the angle guide? Do I need to clean it every time after using? What would happen if I leave too much dust on it? Second, I remember you made a video "Push vs. Pull! Best way to sharpen??? Work Sharp Precision Adjust Knife Sharpener" and concluded it's better to "push". Will you consider to add a switch to control the direction of the motor, so we can "push" both sides? Maybe in Mk3?
An absolutely fantastic way to tell Ken's story! Thanks for the insight into the Man,myth, and legend. Glad to have Zac as narrator. Great job on this mini doc to all that were involved. Take care.
Workes.for.an hour with this, doing burr, then flip and same, then went through all the stones in progression. Stil can't even cut paper. What the heck?
I get a nice burr on the first side then I run it through the left side the same amount of times but I can’t seem to get a burr. Any suggestions? Thanks
10:40...the red 220 grit? I guess your belt colors have changed since this video was made. The belts that came with the one I just bought have 120 red, and the 220 is gray.
First time using a grinding tool to sharpen. Sharpening a bunch of paring knives that needed it. The small blade length and the area where the blade meets the handle (sans choil) made the start position not on the edge guide. Seemed awkward at first. Also I note as the blade tip left the angle guides, it was initially unstable as I had such poor technique to begin with. Quickly improved but there were these little things when found that made a difference. (Wonder what else I need to do better) Overall a very quick process--appreciate learning and overtime getting better.
Yup, the real deal. I bought my first leek at Virgils in Glendale; my first WS KO at Nordic Knives in Solvang. They're both within reach as I write. Thx (and cool video, team)
What an incredible story and an excellent video production! Extremely well done! Thanks to the legend Ken Onion and the awesome company Work Sharp for everything they have done and continue to do for the knife and sharpening community! I built my little sharpening business just using the Ken Onion sharpener with the blade grinding attachment and what an awesome tool!
I have the system and I love it. I’ve heard Ken onion’s name many times over the years, but I wasn’t aw of all of his history. Thanks for doing this documentary and sharing such a humble man story.
Thank you to everyone involved, amazing and I have had the chance to meet the worksharp crew, love all of ya, look forward to see what comes next, thank you Ken for your service
Ken is an awesome individual. I bought my Blur while I was living in North Carolina and it was my first “big boy” knife. It’s been in my pocket for a lot of big times in my life, to include the birth of my son. Thank you guys for sharing this.
