Later installments of the logo, as well as of the Tagesschau news intro, have been designed and animated on the Commodore Amiga, with a VideoToaster card. It was much more affordable.
Nice seeing something being done in the old interface. I acquired the very first model for our studio back in the day, maybe around '82. Last one I used was the V-Series. After that it was all SGI hardware. You could do so much more on these machines, and even faster. 👍

How long did this take to construct in realtime? There are lots of high-speed demos like this on YT, but it has been almost 50 years since I remember standing around the Quantel booth at the SMPTE show watching someone use a Paintbox.
hello, thanks for the question. i think it took a few hours to make. and i didn't like everything i created right away, so I cut something out... did you ever had the chance to work on a paintbox yourself?
@@studiopaeper2877 No I am only an admirer of the tech and the artist who use it. I knew some people in the broadcast industry who talked about Quantel hardware with reverence. Here in California I saw two for sale in the early 2000's on Craigslist LA for really cheap. I regret not getting one. I'm sure they went to scrap heap.
I have some ideas to replicate similar graphics on old hardware, but never had experience working with Quantels... We'll try it on the Amiga) Thanks for inspiration!
@@studiopaeper2877 Video toaster is an old dream, but now I have only have A1200 but with Scala and a Deluxe Paint, this should be enough. There is also a Snell&Wilcocs Magic Dave video mixer for special effects. Heh... good old days )
@@studiopaeper2877 In that building there were 3 Hal Express’ I think, plus a ‘Harriet’, 2 Henry’s and a bunch of Paintbox’s. By 1999 they moved into a bigger space and had maybe about 6 Hal’s, but by the early 2000’s they started to swiftly lose ground to Apple and Adobe. I loved the Quantel machines.
Amazing video! just to understand more, Each of the frames with thumbnail (the ones with name DTL-) is like a scene with all the elements or like a layer? Another doubt. Can you Undo?
hey, thanks! good questions. you can only save single clips, so each thumbnail is a clip and not a pack with layers. you need to save every layer and keyframes separat to rebuild your composition. thats why you need to organize your work good. also with undo, you have only one undo step and not in all menus! ;)
hey. thanks for your interest. this is made on a 30 years old specialized computer. the software comes together with the hardware. there is no software-only version. on my channel you can find some more videos about the system and tutorials from the company quantel, who created the paintbox.
After the graphics were done on devices like this, they needed to be transfered over to either a Betacam SP videotape, or a Digital Betacam videotape, in order to get their graphics done on things like this to air on television.
yes, i also have a DVW500 connected to it. so i can inport and export footage into HAL. i also use a direct sdi-cable to my mac with blackmagic-card to record from HAL.
Holy crap! You made a logo for a German public broadcaster (which has split into 9 broadcasters across Germany)... on the now-discontinued device known as the Quantel Paintbox? How on Earth was that possible?
@@studiopaeper2877 That "3D company in California" thing might be Cranston/Csuri Productions. BTW, Cranston/Csuri weren't based in California. They were based in Columbus, Ohio.
@@studiopaeper2877 Of course. The storyboarding for an ID for ARD with the broadcasters at the time, by Hans Bacher, the designer of the 1984 logo, which was sent to Cranston/Csuri, in order to animate it ENTIRELY in CGI, in the NTSC frame-rate of 29.97 FPS, despite the fact that PAL, uses 25 FPS.
I know nothing about this hardware but if it has blur and gradient mapping you can do that metallic effect easier. Texture Labs RU-vid channel has a video on the concept for Photoshop but the basic principle is the same.

@@studiopaeper2877 Ja seh mal zu! :D Noch was anderes, mir ist schon immer aufgefallen, das Produktionen aus den 90s die mit Quantel geschnitten oder gemastert wurden, immer einen geilen Look haben, irgendwie auch vom Kontrast/ Farben spezielle Optik bzw. irgendwie was glänzendes oder glasiges halt irgendwie, sieht man hier wieder in vielen Szenen, gabs danach nie wieder, irgendwie halt geil!! @@magermunson ich glaube in den 90ern gab es kein hochwertigen spot oder clip, der nicht auf einem quantel-gerät bearbeitet wurde. und die integrierte farbkorrektur war ja schon sehr leistungsstark. dein beispiel von peugeot zeigt ja klassischen 90er-jahre look, dieser gefilterte himmel und die schiefen kamera-einstellungen. dazu gehört der starke kontrast! - richtig geil! ;) falls du mal in köln bist, kannste dir den Quantel HAL mal anschauen oder was dran machen!
@@studiopaeper2877 Genau, es wurden ja auch teilweise dann komplette Tv Serien daran gemastert. Ja sowas hatte ich mir schon gedacht, also ich finde den Look eben voll geil und auch sehr echt/greifbarer alles irgendwie, das kann man mit dem Mist heutzutage nicht mehr vergleichen. Auch hatten ja die TV oder gute EB Beta oder Digibeta Kameras noch 3CCD Technik, das wirkt eben auch bis heute viel besser und analoger als der ganze CMOS Chip Müll. Hochwertigere Sachen wurden natürlich mit 35mm recorded und gescannt. Mach dochmal irgendwann einen Vergleich, mal einen guten Clip nehmen und am Quantel mastern und dann eben mit Resolve oder was auch immer, ob man dann da eben Unterschiede sieht? :)
This make me appreaciate how softwares have been advanced so much over the years. The same graphic like this can be done easily in Illustrator and Photoshop... how we are taking things for granted nowadays... back then these tools must have been revolutionary
@studiopaeper2877 you'd be surprised, if someone were dedicated enough to go through the video and see how you achieved it, you could probably recreate it. Maybe not the exact same steps as you took but close enough.
Why does your Paintbox library have a Rede Globo logo at 00:33? Anyways what do you think modern image manipulation softwares such as Photoshop lack in comparison to Paintbox?
i imported that image from a youtube video, because i was planing to recreate it on the paintbox. the paintbox, or in this case the HAL is something like adobe-cloud with limitations. i can paint and retouch like in photoshop, i can illustrate like in illustrator, multilayer compositing and animation like in after effects and some editing tools. the nice thing is, how easy i can work with images and clips without saving and open and handling files. but compare to modern software i got lots of limitations. i can only work in pal-resolution, discspace can only hold 15 minutes of video. but it was advanced for the time when it was launched in 1991 and i still like to play on it! ;)

Can you help with this please? Did the 80s Paintboxes allow a still image (a captured video frame or photo) to be made into a lower third banner background that text could be written on top of and then repeated throughout a video? I’m trying to recreate 1987-era graphics and can’t find any examples of 80s designers doing this, so does that mean it couldn't because of some technical limitation. I know what I describe was being done with the 90s generations, but I never see it done with the 80s generations.
hi, i try! ;) i'hope i understand it right. even with the first generation of paintbox from 1981 there was an option to move or place a cutout over a live video-input. so you could use the paintbox as a little »video-mixer« or type-generator - with limitations. is that helpful for you?
@@studiopaeper2877 Hi, thank you, but was it possible in the 80s generations to layer text on top of the cutout (when the cutout was made from a photo or video still image)? Because I can't find *any* examples of it being done until the 1990s.
