Never heard of, or been to Porth. Looks like a great mark to explore. In fact, it looks like a damned fine place to come and just have a walk. As always, Ben, great video, you and the team sure have video production sewn up!
I have tried to fish here, spinning in the summer. I didn't have much of a clue, shame I didn't see this video a ling time ago, but thank you for sharing! Great video!
Hi Luke, its fair to say that both methods are equally productive there - if you want the absolute best chance of catching a bass of any size though, lugworm on a running leger rig with as light a lead as you can get away with is a proven winner 👍
Polluted and overfished. Watched the boats pull them self along the rocks dropping their gill nets 1.5 meters off the rocks . Proper sad state of affairs.
When was this? Through the summer? I mainly fish it in the autumn and winter and I’ve never seen anybody netting there. The sewage overflow definitely discharges way more often than it should, a well-known issue with the area unfortunately 😕
Another excellent video, Ben, you guys at Gwinear could easily give Hollywood a run for their money with your production values!!! Defo gonna pop into the shop in the coming weeks for a chat. We moved down to Scorrier in November 2022 and my angling exploits have been somewhat embarrassing to be fair. Been out on a few occasions with local mates, but it's been hard going. Especially when my limited knowledge has trumped theirs! 🤔Now have most of the gear, with little to no idea! Some sound advice and tactics is what we need, and you, Sir, and the team, are exactly the folk we'd like to ask.
Hi Thanks for doing this - I've just moved to Porth. I went out yesterday and tried the high ledge area into the back of Whipsederry. I'm a beginner - been doing a bit of lure fishing for bass and mackerel with and 8ft rod. What kit would you recommend to make life a bit easier in Porth - mackerel and bass? Thanks again.
These guide videos you do are fantastic just exactly what a visiting angler needs as you well know if we're coming from all over GB we ain't got a clue where to go or what to do and we just spend hours and hours catching nothing , or very little so keep making the videos Ben and crew I'm sure they help loads of us visitors , a place I find very interesting a picturesque is Hayle estuary at the back of the Asda now what a place and so many opportunities but some sound local advice wouldn't go amiss , when thtides filling the estuary there must be loads of fish coming in with it I know I've seen some huge seals in there so obviously there's food for them ,any chance of a vid fellas that'd be great oh and Penzance too , best wishes to you all 💥💥💥👍👍👍
Hi John, thanks for the feedback and it’s great to hear you are enjoying the videos! To be honest, I think it’s unlikely that we would cover Hayle in a video a) as none of us really fish it very often and b) it might not sit well with some of the local anglers who fish it more regularly. It’s definitely a good area to try though, like you say! Ben
@@GwinearAngling ah ha I completely understand Ben like a territorial thing i get it , anyway keep up to fine videos , fantastic tackle shop fantastic blokes what a place to live , although I've never actually caught one the grey mullet has got to be my favourite too ,I on a saw one must have been at least 7lb mooching around the harbour at padstow 😁🎣👍
That’s a cracker, it’s a while since I’ve been and had a look in that harbour for a mullet but I might have to if there’s one like that in it! 😅 Thanks for the kind words mate, Ben
@@GwinearAngling well I've been an angler since I was 9 years old and I'm 60 now so pretty good at estimating it's back must have been 4 inch across and I'm guessing a good 18 inch long easy and that's conservative , yes I was dropping bits of pasty in to see if anything turned up and that did turn up , magic best of luck fella 🤞😁🎣
Excellent video, Ben, as we are used to from you. Great production and presentation, very “pro”! Brown trout, LOVES me some sea angling, always have, but defo fancy tackling some of our wilder, less trodden riversides and luring for some wild brownies, any insights, please.
If you mean in the Gannel mate, it’s stuffed full of brownies in the section from the boating lake to Trevemper bridge! They are mostly very small though, one as long as your hand would be a goodun in there. I used to catch them on mepps spinners as a kid but they should respond well to other small lures.
@@GwinearAngling Peachy! Yeah, a fish is a fish unless it's going on the plate. They are stunning lookers, crazy fighters and lots of fun to stalk. Any good spots local to us, we're in Scorrier?
The only places I know near you with a good rep for brownies are stithians res (fly only I think) and the river at st erth near Hayle (not sure whether lure fishing is allowed or if it is fly only). Generally, Cornwall has middling to poor wild brownie fishing in the rivers. The fish are usually very small.
@@GwinearAngling Shame that, big fan of brownies, is there a much prettier, hard fighting, freshwater lure predator in the UK? Stithians is defo fly only, which is criminal as I'd love a day out on the kayak catching some rainbows or brownies for our tea! Yeah, justnever attempted fly fishing, although there is a lake out near Reawla that offers lessons. LOVE lures, love everything about lure fishing, and, tbf, don't see a huge difference between lures and flies, well, other than the abject snobbery, of course! I just feel, a dawn stalk, along some outback river, mist rising, along with the trout, is heavenly. Maybe I bite the bullet and have a peak at fly lessons. Thank you for your help, Ben, next time we're up your way I will 100% pop in to shake your hand, Sir. Your mullet videos, uploaded in your previous RU-vid life, are still a great watch. 👍
I definitely prefer brownies to rainbows, I think they’re better looking. I agree about the lure fishing too, there seems to be still some snobbery attached to fly fishing which, in many cases, I think is unjustified. Both disciplines have their skills and on waters such as stithians there is more than enough room to accommodate both methods. Good luck if you decide to venture into the fly world, if you do, the river side of things is definitely easier I think as most of the time you aren’t casting any distance and there are few wild trout in Cornish rivers that will say no to a small black dry fly! 😄Thanks for the kind words mate and I look forward to seeing you in the shop, Ben
Just living a few miles from this spot is a bonus, great fishing from both sides had a nice size pollock further out along the rocks on the Bowgie side on the deeper water marks top video Ben
Depending what species you’re fishing for, that area can be quite fussy about conditions so you might not be doing anything wrong. It’s not easy to get everything dead right there.
Thanks for the feedback Sean, glad you enjoyed the vid! It can be tough down there when it’s not happening can’t it. I’ve had more than one session down there with fish flying past me on the tide and I couldn’t buy a bite! 😅
The coalfish from Fly Cellars was caught by the brother of an old girlfriend. He brought it to his house and showed me it. Amazing fish from a shallow mark! I have seen many good fish from Cellars and the Harbour marks over the years. An older gent called Dick Moffat used to mullet fish by the toilets on South Quay and regularly had a large group watching him pull up mullet after mullet.
Well explained as usual its a pity other angling shops didn't do the same as you, it encourages traveling angles like me to visit the area and to come to your shop. Well done
Absolutely loved these mark guides. Came to Cornwall 18 years on the trot with my parents growing up . Crantock and the Gannel beach . We used to stay at Trego Farm . I'm going to pay you guys a visit in July for some advice on fishing Crantock and the Gannel . 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
We only over fished it after dark to avoid any potential problems but we did see locals fishing there so we thought it was okay. We were certainly never told otherwise 👍
Really appreciate these "guides to marks" Ben and your presentation skills are excellent. A few years ago I regularly fished those rocks all around Splash point for some big wrasse - are they still about in that area please Ben? Hardbacks were always my favourite bait there for the wrasse.
Thanks for the feedback! There is still some good wrasse fishing around that area but I expect you might find it not quite as productive as it was the last time you fished it. I’m not sure if the increase in the local seal population has had a negative impact on them as they seem a bit less prolific than before. Ben
Hi Dan, I don’t know exactly which part of the bay you are concerned about but I would be beyond surprised if it gets so busy that you can’t find a spot to fish on a mile or so of foreshore. I first moved to Pentire in 1995/1996 and when I started fishing at Fistral it often got very busy then. Every good bit of rock to fish from would have someone on it, especially in summer when the mackerel were in. When there was a good surf, all the gullies at north Fistral would have anglers lure fishing on them and at night, there would be multiple headlamps on the beach. Truth be told, I haven’t seen it anything like that for many years. Ben
Hi, just catching up with my favourite RU-vid vids and again find that Ben and Gwinear have produced a quality piece of content. I fished cellars years ago and can confirm I spent a fair few hours entertaining and feeding the seal(s) with the mackerel I was pulling in 😅! IF you ever get bored creating fantastic, informative and angling relevant films about your local area please do tour the country doing the same. I and I suspect others would love to get your thoughts on other marks around the coast. Keep the content coming, your time and effort is greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the feedback Gary, it would definitely be fun to explore some new marks like you say but I think we will be keeping it fairly local, at least for the time being. In Cornwall we have a good idea about which places we can talk about without upsetting too many folks. Those seals that live around there are all fat as houses from the steady mackerel diet 😅
Another great bit of info, because of this I will give it a visit this summer , thanks. more like this for your area please, the parking info is good to.
I think that depends on what you’re looking for in your fishing. If you like fishing in the surf, the north coast would be your place. If you prefer calmer water then the south. If you want the best chance of bigger fish, then the estuaries (particularly the south coast estuaries) seem to be the places for that these days.
