Pé áit ina bhfuil scéal le hinsint, aicsean le taifeadadh, ná drama spóirtiúil ag titim amach, beimid ann. Bígí linn! Mar sin, bíodh sé ar an bpáirc ná den bpáirc, sa stiúdió ná ar an láthair, i measc an phobail ná san ionad oibre, beimid ann. Tar linn agus bain sult as.
I have a very good bouzouki but don't know what to do with it and it hasn't been used much. I have a book of chords but there are not many books of self instruction. I am learning mandolin and classical guitar.
Girvan was one of the most under-rated players of his era, never got the praise and credit he deserved. In his prime he was teh best defensive player in the world. Like a great goal-keeper he gave the guys in front of him confidence. Decepetive speed, unrivalled courage and skill taking balls in the air, with rare ability to read the game and be in the right place at the right time; he saved Ireland's skin on various occasions with timely tries or interventions. Jordi Murphy is another player who is not had the recognition his ability desrves, although his coming into his own captaining Ulster - we may see more of him again in the future in green.
"...people are gonna laugh at this, but they didn't... they laughed with glee!" How true a statement that is from Andy. Every musician pal I play the AI/PB album for (like this tune and Fred Finn's Reel, for example) stands amazed and laughing with glee at the skill and soul. Rock on, you lovely fellas!
Absolutely brilliant. Andy's arrangement of this song is a real masterpiece. Love seeing these two greats interact, intercut with the magnificent racehorses and Irish landscape. Thank you for uploading!
those bulgarian timesignatures give me an adrenaline dump every time I hear them. Bless you, Andy. You've given me such pleasure over such a huge time.
I love this song and the musicianship of Andy and Donal, but don't be so sure about 'purity'. This version of the song was written by Andy Irvine after a lot of exposure to Balkan music, and the rhythm is in a Balkan time signature. The use of the Bazouki is a recent addition to Irish folk, probably 1960s, and I like it a lot, but it is a Greek instrument, altered for Irish tunings. You might compared this song with another song about Skewbald's race: Martin Carthy's Skewball. It turns out this is a very old song about a real horserace in Kildare, Ireland. There's a printed version from 1784 and probably even earlier versions. Skewball was an English horse that came over to Ireland and won the high stakes race. Check out Mudcat.org for a huge history on the subject. Anyway, enjoy the music, but appreciate the complexity of history.
i have no interst whatsoever in the revival of this lingo because it was belted into us at school all those years ago. the teacher was anti english/anglophobic, as well as anti- protestant. to get us to pronounce place names PROPERLY, they ought to rename galway as golliv, dublin as dublin/blaw clee, athlone as blaw lewin, limerick as limnock and so on. maybe then they can put some meat onto the skeleton and get it up and back to life. frankenstein, i suppose. NEEL AIN INTEREST OGGOM INSONN TONGO GWAILGE ANYMORE. SLAWN LIV GOLLAIRE!!
You were privileged to learn this beautiful language and you never realised it. Pathetic, running down your teacher, who knows his reasons or experienced, England and Plantation ruined Ireland, FACT.
