The height is just over 4 feet from the floor, there's no right or wrong way though. It's just preference, and I prefer mine a little more than halfway up the wall. For the vertical pieces, it depends. I typically try to attach them to a stud, but that isn't always an option. If you go with the studs, that will decide placement for you, otherwise, you would just have to measure the wall and then break it into pieces depending on how many vertical battens you want. Hope that makes sense!
