Only thing that is maybe wrong is with regards to the RCCR. The upper coil is to repel the spring and force the contact open the bottom coil is to close the contact and allow generator voltage to go to the load. When you mentioned the bottom coil repealing the contact you lost me because the ground for the bottom coil at the RCCR only goes to ground at the generator other than that very good video.

To Airplaneinstructor: First, thanks for the video. Took several times watching it before it all finally sunk in. Question: Could you use a Type A (24 volt) voltage regulator with 2, 120 volt AC to 12 volt DC regulated battery chargers in series. 40 amps DC max current.

I see you are using an engine case with the ‘super air/oil cooling’ mod. @6:24 aka, hole punched in the case. You might want to do a rod count.

Very nice video, even after 10 years it is good. :) I Have a question as I have one old Bosch ZAD 14V 11A. The resistor R2 is missing, and some one have replaced it with a wire. Do you have any idea what the resistance value of this could be? The regulator is not working as it should now, it is overcharging. :(

One of the better videos. 99% of them have no idea how a charging system works. The cutout relay stays connected until the generator output drops too low. Then it disconnects till you have enough rpm to charge again. Keeps the battery from draining down.

at 7:43 the secondary flux shouldn't oppose to the primary flux? thanks for the explanation,

Well I already knew if you pass a magnet thru a coil it produces a electrical current thru primary coil secondary coil steps up high voltage and causing spark plug to fire.

You need to point out the diagram you're using is for a externally grounded generator. There two types internally grounded (general motors / Chrysler) most Fords etc used a externally grounded. They have to be polarized different. And some Bosch generators used a isolated field which is basically a internally grounded unit. The cutout relay is needed because generators don't have diodes ! There pretty much EMP proof but the regulator isn't as foolproof. And at about 1300 rpm the contact points are vibrating about 1000 times a second. Not a bad video. Take care.

Im interested to know can alternator magnet type use such voltage regulator? how much I did understand it wuld send continues curent and high voltage to the regulator. I dont have availabel solar regulators in my land and actualy I wanted to see if tractor delco regulator wuld help my alternator charge baterrys at low'r speed ranges or use avr or other closed loop system that has nothing to do with positive or negative on the alternators side. So Im woried to fry my baterrys so wuld it by posibel to use those old dc systems like current cutt out selenoid and similar? Honestly I love engine conversions and to use hv capacitors for plasma and amplifier ignition systems so I come across unusual problems my delci 12si cutts in at higher rpm rangers or starting charge get activated at 2500-3000 rpm and Im cinde if anoyed at that thing. So me other question wuld by how to calculate voltage and amps going to the rotor and specific alternator speed ranges wuld it by possibel to manuali set fixed alternator out put via resistor/capacitor box? Peopel are not specific about those things . And last but not least what wuld happen if you reverse direction on the alternator ? Expecialy on tractor alternators I found out some of them wont charge baterry if you buy wrong alternator turning direction and if that external capacitor is dead the alternator wont charge so is there by any chance logical explanation why this happes?

WHY are you using a RADIAL ENGINE Time.rite; when both Lycoming, And Continental have t heir timing marks on the prop flanges, and the reference marks are on the crankcase? All that you need is a mag synchronizer, (two lights) to time the mags to the engine. Takes ten-15 minutes.

I’m working on a 1946 Funk it has a Delco Remy generator and voltage regulator the wiring diagram I have is unreadable. Could you add the master switch to the diagram. The generator itself Test good grounding the field. Hard to see behind this panel but I currently have no charge due to wiring or bad master switch and that system.

What purpose does the Capacitor serve wired parallel to the point gap?
@SgfGustafsson
@SgfGustafsson Год назад
When the points open they do not immediately stop current flow. This is because when they are a tiny bit open the electricity will arc through the air from one point to the other. This is a problem which causes pitting and other erosive damage to the points. To avoid this the current is given an alternative path, i.e. the capacitor. To put it simply, the capacitor prolongs the life of the points by preventing arcing.

So can a aircraft engine be started by hand propping with battery on and mags on? Or does a starter switch has to be used to to energize the vibrater?

If the current limiter contacts or voltage regulator contacts open, doesn't the field current still have a flow path to ground through R1? If that is the case, the field current can still be maintained, thus never decreasing generator voltage. Help me understand if that statement is wrong.
@ianperry9571
@ianperry9571 3 года назад
nevermind. I got the answer. I believe the author might be a little mistaken in how current through the field is reduced, though. At the 6:24 mark, she indicates that current flow through the field will STOP due to the current limiter contacts opening. However, current will still flow through R1, but R1 greatly reduces that current so the field flux dies down, reducing generator output voltage. Also, her arrows through the generator are slightly confusing. I think the arrows should be going from the field windings through the generator, demonstrating that the magnetic field is being generated by the field. Those lines of magnetic flux cut through the conductors as the generator turns, thus inducing a voltage. Because this is a self-exciting generator, the field is going to take a portion of the current now flowing out of the generator and use it to maintain the magnetic field. This keeps generator voltage where it needs to be.

My question is as we know v proportional to I can be used a resistor to increase voltage drop and reduce current amore loss can be covered in terms of flux in the winding except the heat dissipation is more.
