I feel for the guys today. Presumably, most join to fight fires and maybe add technical rescue work. Then after all you have to do to get on the job and get good at it, you find yourself running EMS calls 80% of the time instead. And too many of those are for calls no one should have to go on.

Being a first responder definitely changes your outlook on life as you see everyone’s worst day. I know it’s hard to forget and I still struggle looking back. My first experience doing cpr was on my 2 month nephew who died. As humans we want to save people when we can, it’s a natural act of courage. I don’t want to label this to only first responders because I believe everyone has this in them. However a first responder has a higher probability of seeing this of course. I commend you in your journey. It’s hard not to think this but you only reacted to something out of your control. If you haven’t try doing therapy. You are not alone brother. They say to be resilient but resilience simply is recovering from difficulties and staying the same. What you want to do is become stronger, as hard as that is. The search to get over it is part of becoming stronger. I wish you nothing but the best in your journey. You’ve done courageous things that can teach people about life.

Thank you for your service. Yeah thats a problem. I enjoyed learning different tactics and going to structural house fires. I just thought for my health it wasn't right as I had an AVM in my head before. I also fell into a big bout of depression and didn't want to see a child die again. Maybe I made the wrong decision, but the game of life gets played once. I appreciate you. Take care!

Took me 7 years to get hired and about 3 to hate it. I feel you man. Being tired all the time is tough, seeing death and sickness is tough, and seeing that paycheck is traumatic. My dept runs ambulances and that takes a huge toll on the mind. Im too old to quit but if I was younger Id go a different direction. I was a raft guide and climber and thought it would translate over but its not even close, at least not at my dept.The blood and guts are no big deal but the frequent flyers will grind a motivated guy down quickly. In my experience, I found the greatest jobs in the world don’t have to sit around saying that all the time.
@johnklus

Just want to say thanks for the response. I know it takes a toll and I waited just as long as you. It sucks getting to the other side of anticipation to find out it’s not a good fit for you. What you said is true. I was lucky to be at a higher paying department and so leaving was a scary deal money wise. Regardless of job titles it matters more to be a good person and make the best out of your life, or really I should say find peace with it. I wish you the best on your journey bro.

Yep. I was hired right out of the army in 2013 at a large city FD that was strict about everything. I spent 6 years doing the 24/48 running 15-20 calls a shift and decided to hang it up. I gained a ton of experience and saw a ton of fires, but the sleep deprivation was killing me. I moved back home where I took my mechanic skills from the army and became a mechanic for fire apparatus. I still work part time as a firefighter in my small hometown.

Been a FF almost 20 yrs and it’s not the same job that I signed up for. Crappy pay, no pension anymore, and the commissioners could care less about us. We spend most of our days running BS and sitting on the computer doing the continuing education stuff. I have a masters degree and I’m watching all of my friends walk into jobs with a high school diploma making more than me. I’m too old now but I would tell the younger guys to do a job that compensates you for your hard work. We can’t pay our bills on honor and praise anymore..it’s 2024 brother

@@sabolou34In California, firefighters are paid extremely well. It just takes a long time to get picked up by a career department and all the games that go with it. Usually a 2 to 3 year process just to have a chance: EMT cert, a year of fire tech classes, state fire academy, grinding as an emt or a volunteer for months/years. That's just to get your foot in the door.

I had the "AVM stroke" and went into a coma, got considered brain-dead in my coma, They pulled the plug and minutes later I woke up. Then every doctor was stunned that i was able to communicate and even walk. Got a large amount of my brain surgically removed still having no symptoms of paralysis and mental damage. The only thing I can think of that made me this durable was all the hallucinogenics I took as a teenager and all the head injuries I got as a kid, with my brain adapting to what it has left to work with🤔 But that's only a theory...
