I am Maddy, an imperfect environmentalist on a journey to live more sustainability. On this channel you will find career advice for students and young professionals interested in a sustainability career, tools for living sustainably, science talks, and so much more!
My husband and I bought our house from a widow. Her husband was a pastor and he had a lot of religious books. We took them to Half Priced books and actually got a good amount of $ for them (plus some cassettes!!)
Hii Maddy, I have recently finished my master's in Environment Management and have joined EY at entry-level position. Want to ask if having a PhD helps you get into a higher-level position compared to one with a masters and corporate exp.
Hey Maddy Albee, I can imagine the job market for evironmental scientist & engineers is highly influenced by environmental law practice, collegiate sales, & market demand. There are other youtubers attempting to influence that demand & the number of persons in the field. Could you make a video about navigating e-law practices, collegiate sales influencing certifications enrollment, and job roles requiring the certifications use daily? Last can you explain how science education is going to help the environment, if more people are not advocating for scientific objective observation where environmental conflict is greatest. Like in use of concrete, from understanding how & what are reasons it is used in construction. Please advocate more young people do concrete work first, learn where more effective alts are applicable & what those alts require. Anyone can do contract concrete work. PPE & Chalk up, aclimate body to 8-12 hrs a day, before you do day1. Drink lots of water, wear a cool rag, listen to your co-workers, it helps to speak spanish & dude/bro. Part time construction, And go to school looks great on a resume and if you persist, and are willingly to go with perspective of it being equivocal to poorly paid intern work. The job exp. Could highly benefit how well a science perspective is received, exactly where it matters most. Where humans challenge the environment. In a forest, in a creek being called a "river", not so much. Please also advocate prospective scientists familiarize themselves with laws of thermodynamics & machine heating & cooling too. Monied driven interests & law negligence are far too rampant. Hands on, scientific observations are needed. If you dont like making mud pies, getting sweaty, sunburnt & muscle sore outdoors and upsetting your peers. Ya probably shouldnt pursue the work or ed.
Thank you very much for this video! Very informative. I'm just now getting into my educational phase after being in the military for the better part of a decade, and environmental sciences has always been something I've been very interested in, specifically on the policy/law side. I'm afraid that I'd be starting late (currently 32). Do you think it would be difficult to transition into this career with little starting experience at my age? I have marketable skills outside of what my educational goals might be, so I'm not entirely worried about that, I'm just interested in hearing what your thoughts might be on someone starting (realistically at 36/37).
Thank you for reaching out! I don't think it is too late at all, especially since you already have marketable skills you can leverage during the application process. I will say that law does take more effort to get into but policy jobs would be a great start! I also recently published a video on making that transition and it dives into more detail than what i can put in this comments field :)
Like the grapes of wrath..everybody come over here there a jobs a plenty, then everyone gets there fighting for few jobs and people starve. Or are on the parents couch.be realistic, go into nursing.
Thanks for the great video. I am half way through my bachelors in renewable energy engineering (Australia) and I am excited to gain experience in the field.
Trashie is TERRIBLE. They say you the bag is for up to 15 pounds of items, but they only pay the shipping on two pounds. I spent $20 for the bag, and then an ADDITIONAL $68 to ship my items back. What a scam. Also, I have been contacting their support for days and no one has responded. DONT DO IT.
this is so odd, i have never had this issue and i stuff it pretty full. i would check with the person who shipped it for you and see if they can help refund you... hope it turns out ok!
@@SustainabilityWithMaddyhi Maddy. It was the post office. They said they had seen it numerous times before and each time the additional shipping costs were anywhere from $20 to $100 dollars! The pre paid shipping only covers $10. The post office will not give refunds and Trashie refuses to refund me the additional $80 I paid in shipping. I wish there wasn’t a catch here but I should have just drove the 40 minutes to my local textile recycling center.
The job market for everyone is honestly pretty awful, to the point where it’s made many news headlines. Many business and computer science graduates are struggling just as much, which is crazy because these are two of the professions that just 5 years ago were considered ‘safe.’ In my area, environmental scientists are in very high demand statistically (this is in FL too, so I image it’s less demand than California and other blue states). However, most jobs require the ‘1-3 years experience.’ So I’m afraid we all have to suck up the unpaid internship during uni and poor paying first job. At the very least we are actually doing something fulfilling guys. IMO better to struggle for those two years than be stuck in something we hate for LIFE. Fulfillment > 200k a year salary in New York City IMO.
This is a really good point, and you're right that it does highly depend on location. I've found that even if jobs list the "1-3 years", sometimes they'll take new grads ;) Good luck out there!
Hi, i want to make my career in environment science but i'm confused like in which stream i choose water, air and land and others can you explain me ??
hello and thank you for reaching out! all are viable options and would fall under natural resources management. the job demand also depends on location, so i would check with your local environmental consulting firms and see what they are focusing on!
Certifications are much more vast than what you listed here. It depends on the individual’s strengths. I’m a technician, I started as a pest control technician, and now I am an asphalt quality control technician. I’ve used those jobs to express the need for each industry to work on reducing emissions and the other aspects of sustainability. Next I’m looking to become an EV charging station technician before becoming a dental hygienist. In all of these industries, and in all my free time, I have always worked on sustainability. Even if it wasn’t in my job title ;)
This is really encouraging to hear, thank you for sharing your story! I love that you are spreading the word and advocating for Sustainability in each industry - keep it up, we need more like you!
The thing about *most* ecology roles requiring advanced degrees is not true in the government and private sector, which will make up most the available jobs! Though I guess this would blend in with 'environmental scientists.' Only roles in academia require the Masters and for leading research the PhD. However most the money isn't in research honestly. But the research is absolutely some of the most fun work you'll ever do.
thank you for providing this insight! i have also found that in the government and private sector roles they tend to blend 'ecologist' and 'environmental scientist' roles. I agree that research can be the most fun type of work!
Hi Maddy, environmental engineer here. I'm glad you made this video because I've always wondered how different environmental engineers were from environmental scientists. It's good to hear from someone who actually graduated with a degree from environmental science rather than guessing and googling what they actually do. Keep up the good work! 😃
Hi! I would recommend watching my “Guide to Becoming an Environmental Scientist” video, but there is a projected 6% job outlook over the next 10 years, and a pretty decent salary!
Hello, Im a 16 year old and I am about to go into A levels, i want to go into enviromental science or enviromental engineering in the future, my question is, which course is better in terms of salary and satsifation and what A levels do i need inorder to go into enviromental science. Also I want to know what are the degrees with environmental science
hey this is a great question! I actually made a whole video on it because I went through the same dilemma... here it is: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-652HFIZECJk.htmlsi=fIKJ4r54OdgsVcIC
Hello! This video was extremely helpful on all fronts! Not only did I learn more about the field from you, but you asked questions that got me thinking about what I really want! I wanna know, what are your opinions about the env science track vs. the natural resource conservation track? Currently trying to think through this comparison.
I am glad it was so helpful! They are pretty similar, and you can likely get the same job with either track. If you want to stay in academia or research, I would go natural resources conservation. If you want to go into consulting, I would go the environmental science track!
Hi, I’m currently an accounting and finance graduate looking to get into sustainability and become a sustainability manager one day. I am looking to get a masters, which masters would you recommend? What should I be looking for in the modules so I have the knowledge to be able to match the job description for roles in sustainability?
This is a great question! I would look for courses in GHG inventory and accounting, sustainability systems, and some form of communications, leadership or storytelling course! I am making a video on master programs this month so stay tuned for that!
Hy i am from Pakistan and doing environmental science degree but i am worried about that in future i could able to secure job in uk or USA with good salary
That is a great question and a common concern! The job outlook for environmental science is highs than average and the pay depends on the industry! If you are worried about pay I would recommend going into environmental consulting!
Hello ma'am even I want to pursue a long distance master degree where are you doing yours i bet it would be a good one please share if you can and yess really like your videos and thankyou for being a guide to us😄
The main problem is nutrition pollution (phosphorus, nitrogen), not the algae which is being caused by it. Unfortunately there isn't much you can do, as the nutrients likely come from many different non-point sources. Hope that helps!
very helpful, thank you! I am just wondering, since it is managed by the county government, if there is anything they can do to help avoid it in future years
The stuff you put in a fish tank to stop alae. Made by Tetra. Comes in a very small bottle. On my natural pond i put half of a bottle in a hand sprayer. No more algae. Doesn't hurt plants, fish or frogs.
Thank you so so much! I’ve been deciding between an environmental engineering degree or an environmental science one, but the struggle has been so real! This definitely clarified a lot of the questions I had, especially the potential jobs.
Hello, Can you please guide, if a person has started working on ESG Sustainability and doing “ESG Sustainability Reporting” now. What courses/certifications or skills should he acquire to move upward in his career path? Best regards,
It is very important for any person to find something to strive for and fight for no matter what the circumstances. Once you set the right goal for yourself, making decisions will be easy and fun. What used to seem like an excruciating chore will turn into an enjoyable activity. Go where your labour will be needed! Go where there is money and where your work will be decently paid! Sooner or later you will have to co-operate with people of different nationalities and cultures. To make your business successful, you should learn a foreign language. I would like to recommend to you Yuriy Ivantsiv's workshop "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips on learning foreign language". This book will help you to structure and organise your individual language learning process, will give you the opportunity to independently determine the methodology of language learning, which will become interesting and unburdensome. In this amazing book everyone will find a lot of useful information: how to learn foreign languages, how to memorise information, how to deal with culture shock, what to pay attention to when travelling to another country. I am convinced that the book "Polyglot Notes" should be in the bag of every business person, school and college student, and tourist. The most important thing is that the book gives a good motivation. Don't be afraid to do something to realise your dreams! If people realised that fears have no connection with reality, everyone would live a much better life. Thanks to the author of the channel for the informative and useful video. Your videos motivate me and give me new ideas!
Your videos are so valuable! Thank you for putting these out, hopefully, they help people who want to use their careers to help the planet find their way. I don't have an environmental science degree but I work on environmental education, direct stewardship, biodiversity, and communication and I think there is a lot of pathways to contribute to this field outside of some of the career paths I have seen you propose in your videos. Are you open to chatting about those other paths to a career in ecology? (my educational background is in fine arts btw)
wow your work sounds really cool! i would be very interested in chatting and learning how you broke into the environmental space with a background in fine arts :)
@@SustainabilityWithMaddy living in New York State makes me feel like there’s just too much but I’m thinking of going for a masters or working for the DEC
Great video. I am a new subscriber to your channel. I work in logistics and am finishing a degree in environmental science with a GIS concentration. Your channel is a jewel.
wow thank you!! this comment made my day. i am glad you like my videos, let me know if you have any questions or want to see a video on something specific!
Thank you! This was so helpful as I was deciding whether to do the Trashie thing. (I'm going to.) Especially happy that I can do something with ripped/stained etc. clothes other than throw them away.
Becareful Judy, if your bag is more than two pounds you will end up paying a lot of extra in shipping. Be prepared to spend anywhere from $20 to an additional $80 after you take it to the post office.
@@SustainabilityWithMaddy please do, there are a lot of videos on how to transition to software development but we don't find quality content for sustainability
