For nine decades, the Tennessee Valley Authority has provided affordable electricity, environmental stewardship and economic development opportunities to the Tennessee Valley. TVA was established by Congress in 1933 to address a wide range of environmental, economic and technological issues, including the need for low-cost electricity, and navigation and flood control along the Tennessee River system.
TVA is fully self-financing, funding virtually all operations through electricity sales and power system bond financing. TVA makes no profit and receives no tax money.
TVA’s power service territory includes most off Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina and Virginia, covering 80,000 square miles and providing electricity to more than 9 million people at prices below the national average, TVA sales electricity to 155 local power companies and 57 directly served industries and federal facilities.
When it rains here, MAN DOES IT RAIN!!!!! I thought it rained in Mass. (where I grew up) but boy, have I learned about rain since moving south in 1999. Especially in Feb, March and April, holy moly we can get a ton of rain. Some years we've had 60+ inches! Thank God for the TVA.
TVA has truly made a difference in East Tennessee. But I am saddened that Surgoinsville (Phipps Bend) sits today like a ghost of past irrational fears over nuclear power safety. It was one of TVA's collosal blunders along with Hartsville, another long ago abandoned nuclear plant which cost American taxpayers BILLIONS!

There is no wind in the Valley and solar needs 30 acres of property per MW and is useless during the hours of darkness without billions of dollars worth of toxic Lithium Ion batteries. And we’re 15 years away from small nuclear reactors.

Thank you, TVA. Now we have rolling black outs because you destroyed the best resource of energy. We never had controlled rolling blackouts with coal plants. I guess clean energy means turning energy off in sub zero temperatures on residents. Who cares about the elderly or people with home medical devices that are essential to life.
