About to make the drive to pick one of these bad Larry’s (in perfect working order) up for the unarguable price of 2k. So so so very excited to be doing so. Thanks for making this video, I’m going to be using a vfd as well so it’s nice to see it actually working well in an underpowered shop.
@wconstructionco
@wconstructionco Год назад
Use a fuji vfd.
@Spaceman_spliff
@Spaceman_spliff Год назад
@@wconstructionco wow, that reply was light speed fast. Thank you for the recommendation on the brand of vfd to use, I’ll certainly be taking the advice and running with it. This week is a crazy week in life, picked up a 1946 18” Oliver 399 planer, 1950’s 36” Delta Crescent bandsaw, and now this jointer will be coming home as well. Who needs relationships and marriages (I kid) when there’s all these beautiful old iron maidens out there waiting to be loved.

@Spaceman_spliff Marshall Wolfe automation is a great source. You can buy a nema enclosure kit as well, you can run a 5hp with Fujis "3hp" with just a bit of programming.

I hope you got a very good price for this machine. 30" jointers are so rare, that the remaining few in existence should be valued as any other "unobtanium" . Oliver and American probably made 10,000 24" jointers for every 1, 30", and probably 50,000 16" machines, and so on.. And even those are very rare now.. If someone needs (or just wants) one of these,, well,, supply and demand.. Thanks for posting this..

@@wconstructionco Definitely not! I'd love to see the 36" if that's what it is. A few years ago, I saw one posted in the northeast.. I can't remember the guy's name, but I think he was in New Jersey or New York. I have a couple of 30s myself, and they're so huge, that I can't imagine what a 36" must look like!

What is the specific colour you used on this machine

I just had it matched to original color I found. If I had to name it, I'd call it German green, everything built there at this time was the same green.

Probably "Resedagrün". Most machines were painted in that shade of green

This is a perfect illustration of how quiet these big motors are on their own...most of the noise is from the whirring of the blade.
@GamingDrummer89
@GamingDrummer89 2 года назад
Yikes, I had to do a double take and go back in the video when you said 35 horsepower on that cutterhead just to make sure I heard it correctly. I'm sure 10-15 would have been plenty for this but I guess "go big or go home" was the philosophy over at Greenlee, lol. And this planer weighs almost 3000 pounds more than my Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel truck. Talk about overkill on a few different levels but what a quiet yet solid tank of a machine! I would have loved to hear some wood be put through it.
@wconstructionco
@wconstructionco 2 года назад
In all honesty, with that head at 42" long, 45 or 50 hp would probably be ideal. There is always knife in material with a head like this. Most manufacturers upped hp with the addition of heads like these. Sound isn't much different running material. Very quiet.
@GamingDrummer89

I just bought one of these saws at an auction... Can you post a video about the fence and anything else that came with your saw? I haven't seen it or picked it up yet, but I think the fence didn't come with it. I may try to outfit it with a modern fence. Ive considered machining a fence similar to the one that came with the saw, but I really think the new modern fences are probably better, and allow wider cuts over all. Anyway, Id appreciate it if you could share more on this saw because there isn't a-lot of information out there.
@wconstructionco

Actually, I prefer the rack and pinion pinned style fence when using a stock feeder, no deflection like a T square style fence. Tannewitz miters fit these saws and viseversa. May be something on my Instagram, warnermachinery
