Well, I enjoyed this movie, despite the fact that it didn't need to be made. I thought it was beautifully shot, and the story was as solid as an unnecessary prequel could hope to be. And RIP Thomas Ulliel, who I found to be an engaging and interesting acting presence.
Not that it makes it worth seeing - not by a long shot - but the single funny line in this film is by Leonidas himself, discussing strategy: "We'll funnel the enemy into the Hot Gates here, where their numbers won't count for *shit*."
The passion, insight, energy, wit, pacing, breadth (and sheer endurance required for delivery of this rant) are all admirable. Of course, it helps he’s bang on target in all the particulars.
The review is interesting but the interactions are priceless. This is classic Kermode and Mayo, discsusing a film like characters in a Tom Stoppard play.
This movie always gives me pause as a filmmaker. A movie like Martyrs, I find to be incredibly disturbing and vile and yet, it's a great film. There's a lot in that. A Serbian Film he's right, it's technically well done. But he's also right the allegory is completely lost within minutes into the film. Personally, I think it's unwatchable because it's so morally bankrupt and not intellectually stimulating either
Someone gave me this movie to watch and i knew nothing about it , before Mick turned up i thought it was an alien abduction movie , fuck me was i wrong , this is one of the best horrors ive ever seen.
BBFC: “Contains moderate violence, frightening elements & frequent peril.” Yeah the 5 minute sequence with all the bugs & spiders & worms fits that lol
