A real mystery gig here! I see Rick Stepton, who by then was assigned the lead Trombone chair pretty much against his wlll..lol.. And the bass bone player. That could be a number of reasons there’s no second trombone. But it probably involved a little ugliness.. If you really played your butt off like John or Rick, Buddy would throw you a little slack. If you decided you were better than the situation… Look out.
Amazing video, where did you find this? Who else is in the trumpet section? I interviewed Dennis Dotson a few years ago, he stated, "Dave Stahl was on the Woody Herman band when I came on. Dave was a great player. I thought he sounded better with Buddy Rich’s band than he did with Woody’s band. In fact, I thought he was the perfect lead player for Buddy Rich. I never heard anybody that sounded as good with that band to me, as he did."
Agreed-certain players sound best on particular bands-Dave sounded perfect on Buddy's band, he was with Woody late '73-mid '75, he then went w Basie before Buddy-he didn't fit well w Basie. Buddy's band was where he belonged INMHO-check out his playing w the Army Blues band-I have clips posted on my page
It's the usual tight-sounding Buddy Rich big band with great soloists. Dave Stahl plays a mean Lead Trumpet. Great job for everyone, but especially Dave. He leads the trumpets and the band to a great sound.
This is far superior to those One Way jazz "remasters". Chase changed my life as a brass instrumentalist and a musician overall. Some day, I hope to hear a clean version of the first album without all the ridiculous added effects from One Way (panning, etc.). 🎺💜🔊🎵🎶
A very young Randy... and is that Billy Cobham at the drums? Silver with his accessible but world-inspired music had quiet effects throughout music-dom.
it's a Conn Constellation 38b which he had since the late 1950's-his MPC was a gold-plated custom Burt Herrick piece. Cat was weird, he didn't want other Trumpet players to know what MPC he played so, during set breaks he would take his Herrick piece out and put a Bach MPC in which was silver-plated. OFC, anybody with eyes could tell it was a different MPC...
I took an arranging lesson from him in the late 70s. Crazy, amazing, weird talent! Into all kinds of strange meters. And the echoplex! I tried that as well! Those were memorable days!
Just few months before i had the privilege to meet him and go and study with him in LA. So many thanks for all Maestro Bobby, and thanks to JJ Martin for having shared
