Fly fishing and fly tying videos, advice and opinions from Howard croston .Two times World fly fishing champion (Teams & Individual ) , 21 Times England senior international & global product manager for Hardy & Greys.
Dear Howard, thank you for this video explaining your favourite river rods. Given that your ahead of the game unlike many others, please do a remake of this video when the successor series of the Ultralite LL will be released
Thanks a mil for this video - this is the best explanation I have heard about the stripping part of fishing… I think we put a lot of effort on matching the hatch, proper casting and good surface presentation, but underwater presentation, swinging and stripping and forgotten… will definitely remember this instruction: makes so much sense!
If you recommend only treating the wing with floatant, I presume the body and shuck should preferably sink. In which case surely it would be better to use a non hydrophobic shuck and body material?
You could but in reality when you take into account the weight of the hook and other materials the poly yarn shuck & body still sit in rather than on the water .
Whatever happened to this channel, as it seems to have died a death? I found it by chance, and it helped me somewhat, then I find all the videos are three years old.
Do u have any advice on setting a net in a kind of narrow river 10 feet wide, not very deep probably only a a few feet and very rocky. I have no clue what kind of net to use. I have never used a net.
Hi Howard, Thanks for sharing your tactics relating to the way you approach Fly Fishing. Unfortunately, the majority of us “pleasure” Fly anglers have made the mistake of constantly casting and then figure of 8 ’ing it back …occasionally mixing it up to try and create some variation to induce a take ! When you listen carefully to your video, it makes total sense. Best regards, Wayne 😀👍
Hi Howard, Thanks for sharing great tips and technique’s for small Stillwater fishing. Your thinking and explanations on how you approach each step for your fly fishing are so useful… I’ve learnt so many things from your videos, best regards, Wayne 😀👍
Howard, you are amazing in how you are presenting this information, remembering that you fished international competition with so much success, I am just enamored on how you go through your fly and line changes. I am still struggling with knots and tying on my flies at the river. It has been wonderful when I had a guide with me, knowing that with my shaking from chemical and radiation exposure from combat and limited eyesight that they are always will ING to help. I wish I had just a fraction of your experiences and on-stream knowledge, thank you, MSG Leum
A breath of fresh air for the fly angler, keep up the great little films I’m a fan. Love your presentation and clearly explained techniques. Engaging stuff!
@@howardcrostonflyfisher9227 I have a greys 6ft 3wt with a 3wt wf line and as I bought into the trend of small/medium river means small rod but there are many larger parts of the rivers I fish and I was wondering if I bought a 3wt 11ft nymphing rod could I use the reel and wf line for dry fishing from my old rod on the nymphing rod and use the extra spool I have for a euro nymphing line when I want to do some nymphing? Thanks again for the reply. I appreciate you taking the time to answer my question cheers. Im planing on selling the 6ft rod after I get the nymphing rod but dont want to part with the reel or line
Awesome. Thanks Howard! One question: what is the knot you use to attach leader to loop? You mentioned an untucked blood knot, but searching the net, I don't find it. Could you explain more about this knot? Thanks much, Toney
Hi Howard. I've just discovered your videos which have been incredibly helpful! All of my local rivers are usually quite shallow and I think this technique will work really well. But just to make sure I've got this right: if, say, the river is 30 cm deep, does the tippet on the end if the indicator = 30cm. In other words, does the tippet = depth of water or do you add a bit more tippet length?
Hi Howard, great video and thank you for posting! Would you be able to share the formula for the leader you're using in this video? Been looking for a solution like this to carry one rod occasionally - would be super helpful and very much appreciated :)
Brilliant advice…..I knew there was something I was missing….the thought of all those missed chances per cast will haunt me and maybe make me slightly more focused on what I’m supposed to be doing. Any advice on buzzer fishing and retrieving?
Gold dust. Thanks, Howard. I've been flyfishing for 40 years, yet I learn loads from your videos. Also, can you tell me what daylight lamp you are using there?
Hi Howard fantastic vid and really like the technique, just a question you said you use a needle knot for the leader to fly line and a Tippet Ring and the end of the two hi vis mono sections. But What knot do you use to connect the 2 pieces of Hi vis mono. Cheers
Definitely giving this a go looks like a lovely way of picking up a few fish, had I great day on the river last weekend adapting your bung method from this month's t&s for the river. Thankyou. Where's the best place to follow you to find out what your up too? Aka what magazines, videos, podcasts and such you are in?
Hi Howard, congrats for the video. I would like to try the technique you described in a river here in Italy, which has the characteristics you indicated. Here are my questions: if the indicator is about 60cm long, the length of the level tippet should be about 3 mt, right? What diameter do you recommend for the level tippet? Thank you so much and congratulations again!
Hi Francesco . You can vary the length of the level tippet to suit the water / size of river / depth . I generally use it as short as practical to get the fly down based on the weight of the flies . Often it is around 2-3m . Diameter depends on water clarity / how pressured the fish , I use 0.12 - 0.08 the most , usually 0.12-0.10.
