Founded in 1994, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is a nonprofit organization devoted to the improvement of history education. The Institute has developed an array of programs for schools, teachers, and students that now operate in all fifty states, including a website that features the more than 60,000 unique historical documents in the Gilder Lehrman Collection. Each year the Institute offers support and resources to tens of thousands of teachers, and through them enhances the education of more than a million students. The Institute's programs have been recognized by awards from the White House, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Organization of American Historians.
Dr. Sinha correctly points out that the antislavery activism of Quaker leaders in the Revolutionary period can be adopted as the roots of the anti-slavery movement but the movement "takes off' at a later time, connected in Wm. Lloyd Garrison. I have come to the conclusion that the movement should be looked at in four phases. The first phase is the 'white anti-slavery movement.' This started in 1767 on the Delmarva Peninsula. The first U.S. census in 1790 reported more free black residents in Kent County DE than enslaved people in the same county. That happened because the Quaker abolitionist Warmer Mifflin lived in the north of the county and the Methodist leader Francis Asbury and Freeborn Garrettson lived for a time in the extreme southern end of the county. By 1810, 72% of blacks in Delaware were free. By 1810 Maryland had the largest population of free black residents. Of course, Pennsylvania adopted Emancipation in 1780. Freeborn Garrettson helped to secure the freedom of Richard Allen in Kent County DE in about 1781. The role of Methodists in the anti-slavery movement is overlooked. Quakers forced slave holders out of their meetings, if they did not free their slaves. Methodists generally were not as forceful, but some Methodist preachers were zealous abolitionists - proselytizers. Methodists were not as diligent about keeping records as Quakers. Yet the Methodist faith grew rapidly so the once Methodists began to manumit slaves, they did so in large numbers in Maryland and Delaware. Manumissions occurred in Pennsylvania because of the law. Methodists welcomed blacks into their churches. Black did not join the Quaker faith in large numbers. Richard Allen and two other black Methodists attended the legendary Christmas Conference in Baltimore in 1783, which was the organizing meeting for the Methodist church in America. The 'white anti-slavery movement did not include black leaders; manumissions declined in number in the 1810-15 period. The free black population had grown to 183,000. (The U.S. population was quite small then.) In the second phase free blacks were faced with the agitation of the American Colonization Society (ACS). The ACS wished to relocate free blacks to Liberia. Black Philadelphians came together in a secular meeting at Mother Bethel and voted to reject ACS plans in 1817. In the third phase anti-slavery newspapers were established and anti-slavery societies were established. Freedom's Journal was the first black anti-slavery newspaper. The first convention of Negro leaders was held at Mother Bethel in 1830 with Richard Allen serving as chairman. This is the best-known period of the American anti-slavery movement. During this time wealthy abolitionists began to support Oberlin College. Oberlin intended to attract black students, which did happen, slowly. Frederick Douglass gained his freedom, joined William Lloyd Garrison and then split from Garrison. During the fourth and last phase of the movement a series of anti-slavery political parties emerged, the Free-Soil Party and the Liberty Party were among them. Guns were drawn in the Oberlin-Wellington Rescue and a slave owner was shot to death in the Christiana Riot all in resistance to the Fugitive Slave Act. Wilberforce University and Ashman Institute (now Lincoln University) opened before the Civil War. The Republican Party was established. Abolitionists took control of the Ohio state government. The Colored School System of Ohio was established. John Brown fought to keep slavery out of Kansas and later marched on Harper's Ferry. The free black population grew to about 400,000, mainly due to natural increase. The Underground Railroad was important psychologically but was not demographically significant. It was counterbalanced by man-stealing.

The professors aren't harsh graders though, they're not out to totally fail people. If you do a fine job and turn in your work, you'll get an A. Even if you turn it in a few days late, they'll deduct very minimally. You need above a B- in your classes to pass 10 classes at $750 each - A great quality Masers degree for $7,500. Some of the professors are well known - From Harvard, Stanford, University of Virginia, U of Kentucky, Gettysburg College, etc.
@@kristenhawkins5465, I am planning to have it done in two years. Every year there are 3 terms (spring, summer, and fall.) So, the first term, I took the first required class - Historiography and Historical Methods. Then for 4 terms, I will take 2 classes each. And the last term, I will take the capstone course where you need to write a 50-page thesis. So that's 6 terms total, or 2 years. They want people to be done with the program within 5 years. For my situation, I am maxed out with 2 classes a term, with all the reading and writing and all my other life stuff. It's a great program where you can go at your own pace. Best of luck!

We know now this to be the case. How much did sailors and navigators know about "indigenous peoples". Were the ship captains and explorers adept politicians? Did they understand politics, settlements and borders? It is easy to sit in a library and talk about what we know now, but what was the knowledge of the people at the time? Assuming that ship captains and navigators knew the nature of the native populations, what was the common practice of the day? It seems to be, like all cultures who sail to a "new world"; Assimilate or Conquer. Again, what we see in the colonization of the Americas is very much the same practice as the colonization of any "new world."
Vidal didn’t imply an incestuous relationship between Theodosia and Burr in his novel. Rather, in the novel, the real-life figure Sam Swartwout suggested that Burr’s reason for challenging Alexander Hamilton to a duel was that Hamilton slandered Burr by saying that Burr and Theodosia had an incestuous relationship. Vidal always admitted that no one knew the reason why Burr challenged Hamilton. This supposed slander by Hamilton was only a theory. But even if the slander occurred, it doesn’t mean Vidal thought Burr and Theodosia were actually incestuous.
I don’t understand why people think the reason Burr challenged Hamilton is a mystery when the correspondence between the two men exists. Burr challenged Hamilton over a vague comment made by a democrat in Albany claiming Hamilton uttered ‘a more despicable opinion of him’. Burr himself didn’t even know what Hamilton had said, and given that months had passed by the time he challenged Hamilton, even Hamilton didn’t know what he was supposed to have said. Burr’s reasons for challenging Hamilton were a big part of the reason he was ruined by that duel..

Baffling how you note that the majority of Burr's correspondences were destroyed for an obvious fabricated excuse yet remain totally unsuspicious. Amazing how you note that Burr showed contempt for revolutionary principles and that he had many connections to northern Torrie but you pass these facts over without a second glance. The man was literally tried for treason but you've done your best here separate the accusations from all of Burr's exceedingly shady dealings. Historians must either be some of the absolute stupidest people on the face of the earth, or some of the most shamelessly corrupt.
The question is not how slavery started in North America, but how it started in Africa and why it continues only on that continent today long after colonization ended. Hmm?
Ok,I do realize he is/I am talking about a different aspect,but,didn't the Native Americans take and enslave other Native Americans? Wouldn't that predate the arrival of any black or white people? Also,wouldn't that make it the law of the land at the time? Times do change,sentiments change,and laws change with them. The world has to be very careful when judging past times by modern standards,it is the proverbial "slippery slope".
