Nice touch how she starts to sit, then stops and asks permission . To sit without asking first would have been considered rude. It shows she is accustomed to japanese traditions.
There are katana like this in existence...... mostly made by YOSHINDO YOSHIHARA a Hanzo Hattori would be a mid grade blade to him!he has even made one from a meteor once
I always find it amusing when I watch this... the "second one down" looks ALOT like one of mine... Except, my same (rayskin) is dyed black.. not the traditional raw white. And my menuki are reversed (not traditional) (I favor the feel of the oranamant providing a index point for the cup of my hands while holding the blade. I'm right handed) traditionally- menuki near the Tsuba are on the left side of the tsuka, and on the right side of the tsuka near the koshirae Mine are opposite on the swords I have had custom built for me. Similar red cotton Ito maki, polished black lacquer saya, very similar Tsuba. Same Copper habiki. (The prop sword may well have a habiki made by the same manufacturer as mine) same hamon, Nearly identical blade profile and tsuka length. My sword existed 5 years before this flick was released. When I saw this in theatere my date said "that one looks like the one on your dresser" lol.
Love how seamless the comedy and story elements are in this scene. Nowadays, people jam-in joke after joke in otherwise important moments killing the mood prematurely.
I wonder if Hatori was better than Inigo Montoya's dad? Sure he was 500 years or so in the future; but dollars to donuts Hanzo's method dated back many centuries and didn't have the tiniest bit of modernity to it.
Love the difference between these two masters, Pai mei is a lonely racist but gifted and expressing his talent, this man is part of society, friendly and kind, but hiding his true gifts
These movies could have worked well as serious movies or as comedies but they just come off as annoying trying to be both. Campy for the sake of being campy
That is such a marvelous scene. Fantastic dialogue. Superb acting. The writing is so unique. Quentin is so important in what he envision, what he writes, how he directs and sets each scene. Movie perfection.
Every time I watch this, I discover something new. This time it is not the acting but camera and cut. When he views the new sword and stretches it towards the camera, it is necessary for the camera to face him directly, centered and head on. This makes the shot peaceful, balanced and very grounded. Then, when he adresses her, they have to show her sitting in the exact spot that a few seconds earlier would have been pierced by the sword. How do they solve it? Show the bald assistant who listens. And showing the listening, they also establish the feeling that this is not only a monologue but is about to shift to some sort of interaction.
