Why does everyone just assume CGC is more accurate just because they tend to lower the grade? They are harsher graders so they must be better? CGC is also much more expensive!
@musictags
@musictags 4 года назад
I don't think they are more accurate because they lower the grade. I think they are more accurate because they're trusted by 85% of the market. And their slabs command a higher profit margin because of this. Of course this is just my opinion from 30 years of collecting.
@Texasbiologyhelp
@Texasbiologyhelp 4 года назад
@@musictags I understand how you feel, I am 57 and have been collecting since I was 7. But just because the majority believes something doesn't necessarily mean it is right. I would love to see your source on the 85% of the market trusts CGC more. That is a fascinating statistic , and I would love to see the survey and results that provided tha statistic.
@musictags
@musictags 4 года назад
@@Texasbiologyhelp I actually did a survey a year ago with 1200-1300 collectors. A 10 question survey based on age, years collecting, grading company...etc. Your younger newer collectors favored PGX and CBCS. The older investors and collectors favored CGC.
@Texasbiologyhelp
@Texasbiologyhelp 4 года назад
@@musictags Did you publish that survey anywhere? I would love to get a copy with all pertinent information. How was it administered, how did you choose your sample, and verifiable lists of participants. It sounds fascinating, as a scientist I am always interested in experimental protocols. So I am assuming that 85% of the respondents in this sample preferred CGC? Randomness and reliability of the sample and how it was selected could play a huge role in the outcome and results you just mentioned. I am not sure your sample size is significant enough to warrant a claim that 85% of all collectors prefer CGC. It is possible you are correct, but more data would be needed to provide compelling evidence to that conclusion. I have been attempting to compile a list of comparisons between the three grading companies based upon youtubers that have had the same book graded by each company. I only have 15 samples ,(which is no where near enough data points to be considered valid within any statistical regression). However early trends have appeared. On average with this small data set PGX tended to grade one point higher, while CBCS tended to average one half a point higher. My goal is to attempt to determine ROI( return on investment) for the three services. Based upon costs to have the books graded versus their average percentage increase in resale value. So I am taking the each book graded by PGX and reducing it to it's CGC value for value. So if a PGX book grades at a 7, I am reducing it by it's average reduction in comparison to CGC (which at this very early stage is a 1 point drop.) then calculating the percentage increase in value at that new grading vs cost. This can be converted into a percentage increase allowing you the ability to put your grading dollars to best use. I am in the process of editing a video requesting collectors to submit the same book to all three grading companies, then make a video of it. I am only using video responses so I can actually see the examples in an attempt to add a bit more reliability to the samples. I suspect that this will be a multi year study to get and really reliable data, but could in effect be very beneficial to the community.
@musictags
@musictags 4 года назад
@STEVEN BASSETT You'll see more people frustrated with a company when the majority of the collectors go with that company. Who do you think has more frustrated customers, your local grocery store, or Amazon? CBCS and PGX will never "catch up" to CGC unless CGC does something catastrophic. I've been hearing people say that there will be another big auction house to compete with Ebay, 20 years ago. It hasn't happened yet. There isn't one single thing that CBCS or PGX do better than CGC. Hell, both those companies even copied CGC's label design and color. PGX has cheaper prices, and CBCS "authenticates" autographs. Their plastic slabs are inferior and their profits are inferior.

At 20:20 that indent on the Wolverine #1 reminded me of an incident I had at a comic shop when I submitted some comics to be sent to CGC. I had the Wolverine variant cover of X-Men #1, JR Jr art, and I handed it over to the new guy at the shop. As I was talking to the manager, Bernie, we both noticed the new guy totally mishandle the comic and put an indent in the comic with his thumb, same spot as your Wolverine #1... I looked back and I see Bernie's eyes shoot open, and then he looked at me with the, "OH MAN!" eyes. For a few seconds I was pissed, but it passed and I actually had to shake my head with a slight smile. Suffice to say it came back an 8.5 instead of the 9.2-9.4 I was expecting (iirc).

I dont mean to gripe or ask questions but maybe your presser is the cause of the lower grades! Yea you got Wolverine 8.0 to a 9.6 but some of your other keys came back lower just saying because there are times when pressing is a bad idea.
@musictags

Tyson Eisenbeisz I've been doing this for 15 years. I know when a book can benefit from a press, and when I should leave it be. The PGX books are usually over graded 90% of the time.

I am the same way, need to have all my cases the same.. even thinking about reslabbing the old cgc with the new cgc cases but thats another story. anyway, I have one comic PGX 9.0 and just wondering how it would grade with cgc but it seems hit and miss according to your vid. some went high, some went low and some stayed the same grade.. I have some CBCS 9.8 too I want to convert to CGC but now I am wondering. Nice vid.. thanks for sharing.

yea CGC grading prices are confusing. I never get it but I guess ultimately it comes to the value YOU give your book as that value determines its category for grading and shiping.. ect
@brettweir428
@brettweir428 8 лет назад
Thanks for the response, It cost 128. I had a local shop that is a partner and extremely reputable handle it for me. It only cost 10 bucks more but then they also graded it on site. The owner gave it a 9 to a 9.2 and another employee stated a 8.5 but admits that he is harsher then CGC. It's 3 weeks into a possibly 6-8 turnaround. Should be interesting but it makes me wonder why some of these channels just pump the books to CGC for grades that are within the last 15 - 20 years. Sorry but in my opinion the print run is WAY to high for most to be worth anything then again what do I know. Thanks again.

Yes. They use a press that reaches 170-200 degrees. The temperature and the time pressing depends on the size and deepness of the indentation.

@RNE2224U I've been using CGC for 16 years now. They have the best turnaround times, best customer service, sturdiest cases, and the highest return on investment, if you ever end up selling them. Having a book pressed means, the book is heated in a 150-160 degree high pressure press, to remove bends, folds, creases, and dents in your books. I would suggest having anything of value pressed. Seek out guys who are well versed in pressing books. It usually take 4-7 days for them to get your books pressed and back to you.
