Joe Marler used to hate people, but then he met Tom Fordyce, and a load of ordinary people doing extraordinary things, and a podcast was born that changed his mind forever. It might just change your life too.
Because everyone is interesting if you ask the right questions. And this is a show about all the weird and wonderful things people do.
Together, Joe and Tom meet astronauts, teachers, marine biologists, cheesemakers, prison guards and everyone in between. Along the way, they’ve learned things that have blown their minds, heard stories that have made them laugh until it hurts, and - well, felt a whole lot better about the world around them and the people that fill it.
Mars is a dead, cold, toxic world. Spending a fortune to explore a dead world is insane. Go to Europa, Titan, Enceladus... heck go to the Moon, at least there's minerals there. Mars is like the Ukraine of the planets. Good money after bad.
Think about this... An extremely attractive woman with a fantastic personality who is extraordinarily Is intelligent.... Sounds kind of like a character from Greek mythology Or some other Outrageously fictional Character ....just don't sound right You could also tell that the guy in the baseball cap Never finished seventh grade
52:00 I never understand why intelligent, informed science communicators keep repeating the fallacy of "The universe is so large, it is hard to imagine there is not other life". You HAVE to produce some argument for a lower bound on how probable life is to appear at all on a random starsystem, or planet, or whatever. I have seen arguments based on how quickly like appeared on earth, and counterarguments, but at least that is something. You can't omit the estimate altogether.
Interesting but there really isn't much for Astrophysicists to do other than examine photons coming from God knows where and make educated guesses about them. The photons we get from space are indistinguishable from any other photons. None can be carbon dated. If you want something that will truly blow your mind ... look up "flagellar motor". They are complex microscopic mechanical motors running on electricity that propel bacteria's flagella. These creatures were zipping around using electric motor propulsion almost 3 billion years before Mammals first appeared. Once you look into this subject a little, you won't be able to avoid considering that life might be bio-mechanical in nature.
Love this interview. You guys are clearly wowed by the amazing Dr Becky, and at the same time she’s clearly enjoying the irreverence and playful mood. Fair play Joe - breaks the mould this. Buy yourself a telescope and you’ll never look back!
Can someone give me the timestamp of where she talks about going to mars? I can think of many ways I agree.. but am still a big space settlement enthusiast. Might be here: 48:25
Let's get something clear. When an astrophysicist says something is "near", what they mean is, it would take our fastest spaceship 50 million years to get there. It takes light thousands of years to get there. Near meaning . . . way way way way way far away. But not as far far far far away as other stuff.
..Also disappointing is that, whilst I expected these guys to believe that Judeo-Chistian bible states the universe is 6,000 years old , Becky probably (hopefully?) knows better. It says no such thing. It doesn't put an age of the universe or Earth at all. Never has. Likely she does know this - but is a signed up Richard Dawkins acolyte and therefore keen to make anyone and everything associated with Judeo-Christian cosmology look lame and foolish - so therefore goes with the lie. Biblical Genesis account is myth in the original greek meaning of it being an allegorical tale or story with a purpose to tell something about the nature of God. It is not literal . As evidence by theologians like Augustine writing near on 2 millenia ago about 'on the literal interpretation of Genesis' and explaining why it wasn't so. The 6,000 year old world meme arose based on on 1 guy - Bishop Ussher ~ 400 years ago - erroneously adding up genealogies of bible characters and concluding this number. It was disregarded/ discredited even by the 18th century amongst clergy. Indeed some of the clergy amateur scientists of the victorian age (when there were no professional scientists) were in fact instrumental in progressing understanding of field of geology and revealing that the Earth was incredibly ancient (millions, then billions). Of course in more recent time some of our more crazy Americans friends have revived it along with all sorts of other wild and conspiratorial beliefs - flat earth, moon landing hoax...etc.
I am so grateful to YT for bringing this video up. I loved the chemistry between all three of these guys. Dr Becky is always so charming and was a perfect guest.
No, official Roman Catholic doctrine does NOT state the world is 4K years old; they accept the scientific truth of a 13.8 billion year old universe and Earth of roughly 4 billion years. I believe the Orthodox Churches and the older mainline Protestant Churches, like the Anglican (Church of England, Episcopal), Presbyterian, Methodist, etc accept the science as well. It’s only the Evangelical Baptists and other smaller dominations that cling to the literal 4K Bible view.
There are penguins aplenty in Chile (king penguisn and other species). Emperor penguins are native to Antartica only - but I believe can be sighted from its southern territories - so not true to claim at all that Emperor penguin is far away from Chile as to be unrelated.
I don't find it amusing when I hear people surprised they 'can see Mars' - just depressing. One day I suppose I'll learn of someone who hasn't ever bothered to look up and see the moon. If I recall almost 1 in 4 still think the sun revolves around the earth.
sending humans to mars i not a bad idea to me we as humans need to move into our solar system which means small hopefully self sustaining colonies on other planets it can be done just but it wont be cheap to start eventually our space travel will get faster the science says so
A masterclass in open communication. The willingness of the hosts to understand, and the willingness of Dr. Becky to slow down and explain the very basics of her field. Love it.
Yea you can get a 48 hour erection but it will be your last and you wouldn’t be able to use it anyway because you will be spasming from pain 🤡🤡🤡🤡…. Not funny to joke about that ….
American. I don't know what yall call your different British accents but the main host guy....that particular British twang is absolutely grating everytime I hear it from anyone. It sounds so condescending. That sort of intonation in America would be taken as "snobby" or very rude without saying anything specifically rude. The "It's not what you say, it's how you say it that makes it wrong..." idiom would apply here. But good god I can't stand that accent. But the dude is funny as hell.
30 minutes in - fucking excellent video to listen to while i'm working. Also - I want to ride in this guys cab. There should be a cab tracker app so people can try and get their favorite cabbies
