What a charming and fascinating tale! This lady is so articulate and engaging, and with her wonderful accent, is a born story- teller. Fascinating to hear these anecdotes from Newhaven! Thank you!
Thanks for your kind words Joe, Sophia does tell a good tale! Lots more of her videos on here and on our Tik Tok channel if you fancy having a look www.tiktok.com/@livingmemoryassociation
Love the smell. The grammar school nurse's office in the 1970s had liquid dispensers. I never smelled it again until about 10 years ago. I was in a doctor's office. He had it in the bathroom soap dispenser.
Grew up in and around my Granny Strachans house in Sheriff Brae, Watched the banana flats go up and the auld Kirkgate come down. Played in and around the tide, brilliant times. Auld May Stewart grannies neighbour used tae feed us fudge and tablet.
I'm astonished with your mum worked as a tailoress, made clothes for the family, had nine children and cooked and cleaned the hoose. OMG I can't believe my ears 😊
This has been so interesting to listen to, it reminds me of stories from my late husband's childhood. He was born in 1949, one of 7 children, and grew up in Greenock. Thank you!

That looks like one of my dads photos, his pals were the Embers. He took photos of numerous bands and musicians who played mainly in Edinburgh during the 60s, including the Stones, Kinks, the Who, Pretty Things, Chuck Berry, the Walker Brothers, there's photos of local bands but all taken before l was born. x
Love the stories I’m a Paisley buddy born 1945 , great memories of growing up in Paisley .. seeing the likes of Stanley Baxter Jimmy Logan at the Paisley theatre queuing up to get into the Gods , Jimmy was a Paisley buddy can Remember my motheralso . going to Glasgow to the Baras . To get Bargains even recall Paddy’s market... also On the steam Train to Stevenson Great days out so many happy memories . What a different world we live in now ...☹
The guy in the poster, wearing jeans and a black shirt, is the late Scott Walker, the lead singer of an American group The Walker Brothers. They had a few hits around 1965 including Make It Easy On Yourself. Scott had a wonderful voice and was very beautiful. I also had a huge crush on him! The blonde man is British actor David McCallum, who played secret agent Illya Kuryakin in the TV series The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Sadly he recently passed away on 25th September 2023. Amongst many acting roles, inclding The Great Escape, he starred in NCIS, playing Dr Mallard, from 2003 until his death. RIP Scott and David.
Great days : finding an iron Bru bottle , getting the deposit back and heading off for broken biscuits . The bogey man ! Also 'The Cruelty Boys' , My mother was always saying "they'll have to get the cruelty boys on to me" meaning she was about to give me a slap . The Barras , whelks and Danny's Delicious Donuts spring to mind .
Many a time I felt that administered mostly by lady teachers, it hurt especially on a cold winter's morning. Managed to collect a good few of these over the years.
That was just fantastic i shed a tear at some bits but laughed my head of at other bits You took me back and i could picture the single end Keep them coming PLEASE 😢😢😢
If it had been for fought Queensbury Roberto would never ever have beaten Ken. Scotland have had a few heroes but none of them come close to Ken. RIP Ken. Great song by the way.
Hehehe, so funny to see one of these again. They had one in Stockbridge Bayne and Ducket, known by my friends and I as Dayne and Bucket as we didn't like the bockle brown shoes either! Thanks for posting.,
Great fighter from my neck of the woods, Portobello. I remember seeing a gold Rolls Royce (?) in Edinburgh with the registration KB123 which I think was Ken’s. Maybe someone can verify that useless bit of info !
Wonderfully evocative. I was born in Elizabeth Street in 1949. Can recognise all of this. My parents were Polish and were Catholic. My dad used to go to Ibrox and support Rangers (as did I) without really understanding any of the religious implications. When I first went to school, it was run by nuns. I was brought home a few days after I started and they told my Dad he was supporting the wrong lot!! The only "pocket money" I ever got was going round the streets with my pals looking for empty bottles which you would take to a shop to get the 2d or 3d deposit back.
Shame the picture shown is NOT from that very poor era looks to me taken 1970s A picture of the streets and tenements of the 1950s would have been more evocative of the poor times the lady is speaking about .
Thank you for uploading this fantastic podcast! I nearly got to meet this hero in May 2020 when I came over back to Scotland not soo long ago but he wasn't feeling well so we didn't want to bother him, My family members knew him, my brother knew him, my father, my grandfather, and my great grandmother. I remember hearing stories about him since he lived upstairs of my grandparent's flat in Edinburgh, I remember seeing pictures of him with my great grandparents. It's remarkable that he was still active and walking about at that age. He is truly a legend of his time and holds a good place in my family's hearts as a friend!. His name shall be remembered through this, thank you!
