You are so so right about people who join fundamentalism. Many of them are people with disordered personalities. They are craving structure craving some sort of external locus of control. Because of poor life circumstances they didn't have that. So they cling to a religious system to get it. I know because I did the same thing in my own way.

Mark, I had asked you a question about a year ago about Nxivm potentially designing an 'app' that if installed on the member's phones.. they could be spied on. You answered me, which I appreciated, telling me that there had been some effort- but it ultimately did not get too far due to disorganisation and Raniere's laziness. I sincerely believe that Raniere's laziness is a huge key to understanding many things that remain unanswered. My understanding of pathopsychology is very limited, but I have seen where there are psycopathies that are labelled either 'organized' vs. 'disorganized'. Although he was an evil genius in regard to triangulating people against one another... so much never got off the ground due to the fact it would have taken far too much work. Thank you for your continued work in this area. It is my true belief that much of the work you did during this dark time actually did some real good: even though the leader at the time was malignant. On masturbation, I was lucky enough to have a dad that was asked some personal questions growing up by his bishop, and he responded, "Oh, let's not talk about me, let's talk about you," and was then invited to go to a different ward by the bishop. My dad just didn't care about normal human behavior. Unfortunately he didn't find out that these questions were still being asked when I was a youth and through my mission. Had he known that bishops were asking these personal questions, he probably would have been asked by our bishops to attend another ward, because he's never thought anything sexual is anyone else's business.

At 14 and as innocent as you were, how can anyone expect you to speak up while this is happening to you! You were never given any real sex education. You didn't know what was actually happening. I'm sure you were in shock. Any 'religion' that puts any sort of blame on the girl herself is Not a religion of God. Women are treated equally to men in the church. The only thing is positions they can’t hold such as bishop that require “priesthood”. However, they still have many callings as young women leaders, seminary teachers, etc. No one at church sees a woman and treats them differently is my point and they still have a big callings in the church. I think the way my dad explained it (kind of interesting 🤷) was women can have kids and men can’t so men get priesthood and women can’t.
I don’t think that’s accurate because any calling or selecting counselors in organizing the Relief Society has to be authorized by the Bishop. If your spouse has the final say on anything you choose, are they treating you as an equal?
Women are absolutely not treated equally in that cult. They give them a few crumbs of responsibility, but no real authority. The LDS church fundamentally reduces women to breeding stock without explicitly saying so. At least the FLDS are up front about it.
The question is not “treated” equally, the question statement is “Women and men are equal in the church”. Even your response has the caveat: “The only thing is..” when bringing up the priesthood. If you have to admittedly carve out that little space, then they are simply NOT equal. How many bishops, stake presidents, seventies, apostles or prophets have been women throughout the history of the church? Zero. It’s as easy as that to show how not equal this is. There is no position a woman can hold in the church that is not under the direction of a man.
My mother bought me a book on things like periods, how one gets pregnant and that kind of stuff. But the information WAS given. There was also nobody s.a-ing my sister and myself.
My mum got me an early learning book with pictures when I was about four/five. I remember thinking it was hilarious because of the drawings I couldn't imagine finding out as a teen.
Tell me you don’t know shock and trauma victims often go nonverbal (and hence couldn’t say why did you do that et al) without telling me you have never experienced a trauma that made you unable to speak.
And right here is one reason why it is so dangerous to give lay clergy so much power. Not that trained clergy can't be a problem but for the most part they have some psychology training and have degrees in religious study so they have a deeper understanding of the Bible in general. Mormon bishops are just the average Joe next door who happens to be white, male, and mormon. In my first marriage (about the last ice age ago) our bishop asked if we were having oral sex. I thought the question was weird but I was full on mormon then so we just answered him honestly thinking that why is this a problem? He pulled our temple recommends. I now understand that there was a short time (and this fell in that window) that they were all up about how sinful oral sex was. That was rescinded but that was so traumatic for me. I was already a hot mess with respect to emotional sexual health from all the shaming I got as a teen. One of a large set of resentments about that "church". It isn't a church. It is an organized lucrative scam founded by a scam artist. And I don't believe for a minute that the council doesn't know this.
I think its worth pointing out that this is a case of an extremist cult situation and not the general trad wife situation. This is of course abusive and sick, but that should not have any bearing on the benefits of the trad wife movement.

I’m a traditional wife who still has a beautiful relationship with my father and my husband treats me with respect and love every day.
There is no benefit to being a tradwife, any more than there is benefit to being a janitor. Some people may choose it because their options in life are limited, and this is the only economic opportunity they have. But for most women, investing in themselves is a far superior option. I didn't dream of being a maid growing up. Be honest - you are looking to offload the labor you no longer want to perform in your life. You are bad husbands, bad fathers, bad humans. No benefit at all.
@@sujathakashyap5937 Countless studies have shown kids grow up better in a household with a mom at home instead of working. Lots of happy families have done this arrangement over centuries. My wife is treated like a queen. She gets to spend time doing the things she enjoys, she gets to spend time with her friends, she gets time with her kids, it's not a trap! We both help each other and take care of each other. Sorry, but this woman is dealing with an issue with a certain flavor of fundementalism, and that is the problem. If you have a bad husband, I feel sorry for you.

I’ll turn to my father and mother, my church, and finally I’ll ask my female friends to pray for me and for my children. The thing is though, I wasn’t pressured into marrying a man who I thought might leave me one day. Through prayer and seeking God’s will, I married a man who seeks after God even more than I do.
