Over 88,000 people survive a stroke every year in the UK, but that's only the start of a long and gruelling recovery journey.

The traumatic impact of stroke can affect anyone - mums, dads, grandparents, young people and children. Brain damage, caused by a stroke, can leave survivors unable to move, see, speak or even swallow.

The Stroke Association is the only charity in the UK providing life-long support for tens of thousands of stroke survivors and their families, each year. We fund vital scientific research, and campaign to secure the best care for everyone affected by stroke.

Anyone affected by stroke can visit stroke.org.uk or call our dedicated Stroke Support Helpline on 0303 3033 100 for information, guidance or a chat when times are tough.

Finding strength through support.

After my stroke i can no longer drive my car or motorbike due to visual loss. Had to learn to walk a strate line again and navigate up and down stairs. Have difficulty reading. Poor memory and i get lost easily in shops and no sense of direction. 😅😅 The world is diffrent but im slowly adjusting to it.😊

My mum had a stroke in 2022. She was unable to speak but kept trying to communicate. She could understand everything and nod or shake her head when asked something. It was heartbreaking watching her cry. She fought hard but died four weeks later.

Michael, thank you for sharing your story and we are grateful that you have recovered. My wife had a stroke back in March 2024 and is currently recovering in rehab. When this happened out of nowhere, this makes you think that there is more in life than just athletics. As a result, I got back into running and inspired by those victimized by stroke that plays no favorites. Every race that I will participate in from now on will be dedicated to stroke awareness. Thank you, again!

My life was saved beacuse of this procedure. In may 2022 I suffered from ishemic stroke and was taken to hospital. There doctor conducted mechanical thrombectomy without any delay ( within 1/2 hour of stroke onset) and saved my life.

In its current form, UTILISE is a face-to-face therapy, which limits how much time people can spend doing it. Kerry will be testing an app-based version of UTILISE that can be used remotely.

Keep going Claire. You might also benefit from just swinging your lower legs while sitting like children do. Even bouncing in your chair on a cushion. Or straighten your legs under your table scissor and hold straight for a few seconds… Your legs have more muscle so would be more useful. Also walk barefoot or with soft shoes to let your weight press upon the insoles of your feet, this pushes blood back up, giving your heart a little assist.

I suffered to a burst AVM in 1985. It was a year until I could process verbal sentences. Over the years, I have noticed that aphasia, is a gift not a disability if you observe the society that we a living in. Before city life even began, we humans lived of the land, who had little verbal language, we had intuition and natural skills. Today everything is leaning heavily of technology, time and verbal information. I made a dicision to leave this matrix 6 years ago and I created my own identity as a living man with Wernicke aphasia and no corporation can verbally contract with me, not can I process State documents. I created my own life, where everything must be written on simple terms that suits me. I live by Common Law and the Commandments, which is superior to the Government which is a corporation. In my spiritual way, God gave me aphasia, to go back to nature and live the way we are supposed to. I have no disabilities at all, when living on my own terms.
