As an italian and mafia story/traditions passionate i can say that this type of ''signals'' aren't a common thing anymore, for the situation that the mafia found itself in after a lot of police raids and laws, they are really low profile. Public terrorism or ''signs'' were used a lot of time ago. Rightnow the mafia is deeply situated in the high ranks of italian governament, they lay low without giving any hint that they are still active even tho theres still a lot of corruption. Supposely if the mafia had to kill somebody, they would probably make him vanish out of nowhere in this times, no eye witnesses, no signals, no body of the dead person. That makes it even more scary thinking about it, also fun fact the vatican city is highly connected to the secret services of italy and mafia. Less involved than years ago but they still are involved in many chilling cases
