Just did some paperwork on an Argo picking it up this week. I live in the Yukon so very similar conditions to yours. I’m looking forward to be able to access areas that are difficult by atv or SxS more easily. Really hoping to get in a good hunting season with the new machine. Excellent video also.

Nice machines!, what's the max speed whit tracks?.
@nvgun40
@nvgun40 2 месяца назад
@@experiments22 depends on the tracks used. I have seen some machines as slow as 9mph. I have maxed out around 20mph. Normally though, I never go above 14-15mph with tracks on. Traveling fast with tracks on can lead to chain wind up and that can cause binding and breaking. Add to this the terrain you would normally travel in with tracks on negates high speed travel anyway. In most terrain that requires tracks I am lucky if I can go faster than 7-8mph.

Looks like your having a great time. Tracks you have seem to be working better than others are proclaiming. How's the maintenance been? I have a max 4 6x6 that I have had since 2000 and just went right through it. It's been pretty reliable but I keep it greased and oiled where as I believe a lot of people get lazy with. Tried out the aurora and the frontier to feel out the difference in transmissions. Main reason Is the extra space in the back. Bead lock rims are a plus also. Thanks for any insight.
@nvgun40

I am running the normal 18” Argo rubber tracks. They work phenomenal. I admit though, the Alaska Bush Tracks are better in most conditions. The Argo tracks are better in soft snow. Maintenance is easier than most people think. The key is staying on top of the preventative maintenance. This is my second machine. My first machine was a Frontier. The Aurora is hand down better.

Look forward to watching this trip every year. I think I saw the AK Bush Tracks on one of the machines earlier on, how do they compare to the factory tracks?
@nvgun40
@nvgun40 11 месяцев назад
You did see a machine with AK Bush tracks. How they compare? In the conditions you see in this video the AK Bush tracks work superior then all others, imho. However, every track made has pros and cons. When we got out on the hard pack road the bush tracks slide around a lot more and that can be disconcerting. Also, the AK Bush tracks work in snow, but the 18” Argo rubber tracks are better by far than the bush tracks is deep snow. AK Bush Tracks do make an addition belt that can be added to the outside of their track that will give them better flotation in deep snow but the problem comes with widening the platform quite a bit. I’m the areas where this video was made, we simply can’t go on some of the trails with the additional width. AK Bush tracks also do not do well on ice (they do provide for ice cleats, but again without ice cleats the Argo rubber tracks do better, and with ice cleats the rubber tracks still do better than the bush tracks with ice cleats). AK Bush tracks also don’t do as well on hard slab rock, concrete, and pavement. Again, though, for everywhere you see us going in this video, the AK Bush tracks are superior. However, even that machine with the bush tracks got stuck twice during this summer and fall seasons. In closing, I will be outfitting my machine with AK Bush tracks, but will be keeping my rubber tracks because I use my machine in deep snow and for plowing.

I’m a 30yr Forest Service veteran. In winter we sell Christmas Tree permits for folks who want to go out and chop their tree down. A family tradition! One year I was watching a dad drag his tree out of the forest in deep snow with the tree on a blue plastic hay tarp. About 15ft by 15ft I guess. He had roped tied to the grommets on the tarp and to his fanny pack on his waist. With the slick plastic he barely knew he was towing a tree. Watching the sled rescue I remembered this and started thinking it would have worked in this situation as well. You could even place a 2x4 across the tarp at the top, wrap the tarp around the 2x4 and then hook the rope on the grommet if this makes any since. The 2x4 would keep the sled from pushing the tarp below snow line if you kept the tow rope short.

Wouldn't it be less strain on your hinge pins if the tracks were on the ground? Great idea with the vice grips though. I'll definitely will be making this tool. Ratchet straps and eye bolts works but are not easy at all.
@nvgun40
@nvgun40 Год назад
Friction/strain on the hinge pins is the same whether on the ground or off the ground (especially if the hinge pins have a lot wear and are "cammed" out). Because the way the vise grip tools work, its still going to pull the hinges together to make pulling and replacing the hinge pins easier. I have removed and replaced a track in the field without raising the machine and driving off and back onto the track, but that was a field repair. Lifting the machine and doing this off the ground allows me to do the work inside the garage; which is a nice bonus to work inside a heated garage when it below freezing outside. ;)

I have a question. Have you attempted open muskeg or floating muskeg in an Argo without tracks? I’m thinking of buying one for surveying in Alberta
@nvgun40
@nvgun40 Год назад
Apologies for the late reply. Yes, I attempted open muskeg and/or floating grass in my 2018 Argo Frontier without tracks. It really depended on the options I had for picking the path forward. On large open fields of muskeg and/or floating grass, going straight through the middle was not really an option. It became a slug fest and required myself getting out and placing a land anchor at times. Going back to my days with 4 wheel ATVs and SxSs, I would pick and choose my path to try and stay along the outer edges of the muskeg and/or floating grass. With the Argo without tracks I was still able to get through more difficult areas of muskeg and/or floating grass than ATVs and SxSs. I was able to so towing and hauling heavier loads so the Argo still had an large advantage. It just took a bit of path scouting, and picking my line. At the same time, having the proper gear along for self recovery. Adding tracks allowed me to be less choosy about my line.

Love my 2022 Argo frontier! Need some tracks on mine though. Your thoughts on the Argo trailer!?
@nvgun40
@nvgun40 Год назад
There are advantages and disadvantages to the Argo trailer. Advantages, it floats (there are other trailers that float though), you have four spare tires in emergency’s, extra bearings in emergencies. Disadvantages, you need to reinforce the upper lip to take advantage of tying things down. The front lower corners of the Argo trailer can really get beaten to the point of cracking or holes in rough and rocky terrain. I like my Bosski ATV Wagon trailer a bit better. It floats, but has a hard closing lid that keeps things dry inside. Plus I can load stuff on top and tie things down. It has better ground clearance too.
