Very nice. I haven't heard that timing on variation 1, but it's a good alternative. I was taught years ago to play a doubling on variation 1. What would be your thoughts on this if it were presented to you in competition?
Perfectly fine to play the optional doubling to the first variation. I left it out this time because I had just had a conversation with Roddy Livingstone who was a main pupil of James Campbell Kilberry, who said that James did not favour putting it in. Next time I might change my mind - although with many of the variations very similar in melody and structure I think leaving it out might slightly favour the tune. All a matter of musical taste and opinion.
"Glory is the reward for valour' No words ever spoken more true when willingly running toward your death.. Cromwell burned our castles, but our blood lives on... "Gharg unair dhuisgaird"
Really nice tune, hard to imagine it being played better. Not having learned it, is there a transcription of it how it should really go? Is there a recording of how it should really go if PS society collection is not ideal? Still very much enjoying the Ayrfire chanter
This song was my introduction into the world of Piobaireachd. I remember it blew my mind and I played the opening line to my teacher and asked him what the hell it was and he explained to me what piobaireachd is. I was like... WHY DIDNT YOU TELL ME ABOUT THIS BEFORE? lol
Thanks very much Colin....a very big tune indeed....especially enjoyable as I have lived in Fergus these past 22 years....probably we played in the Frasers together 31 years ago....

Came here after a reference to the fine tune played in a mess dinner on Malta by an HLI Piper in David Nivens book, The Moons a Balloon. I'm sitting in a hammock on the banks of a dreich Loch Ness hiding from the rain listening to this. God bless the internet!
