Professional DJs and Photo booth Rentals for All Occasions. Gig Logs, DJ & Photo booth product reviews.
About JPW aka Jon P. Wise, I've been in the mobile DJ business for over 25 years. Witnessed first hand the evolution of the DJ equipment and industry. Started my RU-vid channel to share the knowledge I've learned over the years.
Never had that problem with the L1Pro16s. Had it happen with my Maui 28 G3s this past weekend. I just move the drinks off the speaker to the floor. The guests see that and don't do it again. I've also had photographers put their lenses on my subs, and I ask them to move those as well.
Got my 28 G3s a couple weeks ago and used them for their first wedding gig last week. Initially I had them dialed in at 1:00 for the main and 2:00 for the sub. Was blinking the "LIMIT" light all night long (which, as an old-school DJ (like you!), always worries me). I'll try to get that main up a bit and see what it does. No clip lights all night for 120-130 people with some pretty heavy-bass music. Instantly noticed that I didn't have to shout at guests or take them somewhere else in order to hear what they were asking me, and I didn't walk out with any ringing ears (like I did every night with my L1Pro16s).
We play in a duo with electric guitars and drum machines, and we play 80 times a year. The column speakers have too wide of dispersion and the stage was too loud the few times I've tried them. We keep the stage volume low and the energy high. We recently bought Bose 812's, pole mounted, 100-degree dispersion, and we could not love them more. They keep the stage volume low and sound truly amazing. We sound better than we ever have, and we've been gigging for 35 years.
I adjust the mixer and each gain until it’s just blinking into the yellow (pioneer 1000). You want to have a clean signal out of your mixer so make sure it’s not in the high yellow or red.
I saw the sound couple on RU-vid had something made that was slanted and just place on the speaker thus anything placed on the cabinet just falls off on to the person
Good idea. It does help, but some of the time they will read the sign out loud and still put their drink on it which I just don’t understand. I’ve actually had photographers do that.
Youre confusing Headroom with your mixer... Each speaker is built and desinged differently. The Gains on the EVs are designed much differently than the Bose. For one speaker youll need to increase your master volume high enough versus the other being much more sensitive.
Great video!! I’ve been following and been researching column arrays since your videos on the L1 Pro and have thought about going with the 28 G3 in white as well - this video helped confirm that to me! Great to know you’ve used them all thoroughly and still think the 28 G3 is your favorite. Thank you for sharing your experiences!!
I found the same with Bose, now one services them in the Chicagoland area I would have to ship it to Bose to get repairs if needed. I believe it's the same with LD systems here too :((
You literally single handedly got me to go to Guitar Center and listen to the Pro16. I thought they sounded great especially on the low end! But then I found a deal I could not pass up on the RCF J8s and grabbed a pair of those. I still want a Bose system though...but I am a gear freak and want them all lol!! Can't wait to see your review of Maui 44 G2!!!!!
There is a volume and a main level. turn to -80, set levels for your loudest sound source. then turn up volume to level you want. It's got way more headroom. I run mine at 0 volume and main at 0 and I can get an acoustic and vocal at 115 db. and still had more headroom, it is a tank. Also, put it in live mode, the club mode is much more bass heavy and less balanced.
I’m thinking of purchasing the Bose system. I’m not sure if I want to get the eight or the 16. I’ve heard reviews where they say. the 16 is hard to control the level of base even with it turned all the way down. I’m going to be playing acoustic and electric guitar vocals and some BACKING TRACKS. What are your thoughts?
Yes I agree that might be a problem. I know from a Djs point of view the bass is deep and strong I usually tune the bass way down during first dances at weddings just because it’s so strong. Not sure how this would be for musicians.
I just went to Guitar Center and listened to the Bose L1 Pro 16 and was very impressed. I recently got rid of my Evolve 50s and am looking for a new column. You want to sell your Bose?
Wow great design! I went to a Guitar Center earlier today and listened to these speakers and was blown away by the clarity and deepness of the sub. Sounded really good. I recently got rid of my evolve 50s and am looking for a new column!
I got use to the switch on my JBL one of the bottom lites blinks once. Its on every-time . Also for vocals the mixer works well for a performer. . I added another vocal processor with it work very good. If you sing
Great video brother! I never even thought about using Bose as a DJ speaker. I had EV Evolve 50s for 5 years and loved them. Looking to get a new set of Column speakers now so looking into the Bose and Maui systems. I like your reviews since it is more of a working man review!
As a DJ i tried both systems before buying on different genres of music (I advise future buyers to do the same), in my opinion the Bose subwoofer feels different from the Ld as if it is bigger, the heavy bass frequencies are a bit more pronounced (you can feel it in the chest), the ld subwoofer can be heard very well, a natural sound (birch case vs abs/plastic) does not go down so much in the heavy bass but you can feel the music/resonance of the birch wood as it comes out of it, now on the column side the Ld maui 28 g3 wins clearly due to those 2 tweeters of 1 inch placed on top of the column in a horn, on each column which actually throw the sound very far and make the sound, sound crystal clear, besides that the ld columns are much more musical, the low/high mids are more pronounced the sound separation is clearly superior, they sound louder and clearer, whether it's guitar, piano, voice (music played from the laptop-mixer outside in the open air), all these aspects and the fact that the ld system is cheaper by 400 dollars a pair(white) convinced me to buy them! I'm not talking about the net superior construction of the ld system, without a bit of plastic/abs in it!I made this choice strictly according to my ears as a DJ!
Been rocking my pair of Older L1 32 model-2 with B2 bass for bands and pair of F1 812/F1 subs for FOH..good investment through the years..on my L1 32’s i have a green reflector stickers just for visibility
I will explain this in a video soon but in a nutshell after research I found that the clipping light going off of totally normal on the LD systems as long as it’s not the protect light. I explained. Why after 8 months I changed my opinion because of the 180 coverage was killing my ears. Full explanation video coming soon.
