This was very informative! I take custom sugar cookie orders through my business , but am finding i want more of the baking aspect. Just want to sell cottage food out of my home but don’t know how to present this to customers 🫤

@@BuildaBetterBakery Yes! Maybe a donut Friday or a breads on Wednesdays. To fill in the gaps when I have no cookie orders and suffice my love of baking 😆. This would be on a very small scale, as I’m in a low populated town but also a main rd. Not sure I would need the business plan you mentioned, this would be a sort of self serve road side. Wondered if you had any experience with this type .

@LLBmcq yes, we had a porch that was just for us. Depending on what your front area looks like, you may need to set up a separate structure for shopping. But still on your property. Or even a movable trailer situation you can pop up in various places!

Did you need to check with your town at all a about doing this on your porch? As far as extra traffic etc.

Yes, I read my lease to make sure the housing was ok with it and moved forward. This was on a military installation, so slightly different than civilian. I would think the ok from leasing agency, HOA, or other neighborhood entities would likely be all you need. You won't be a commercial kitchen so zoning shouldn't matter. Maybe also check your cottage laws to be safe.

I’m gonna do my first soft launch presale for Mexican sweet bread straight from me home. Is it recommended to not allow refunds once order is placed and paid? I’d like to get a sign outside my house that reminds clients to call me so I can walk out with their products some day too

My normal process is that clients will pay in full to secure the products for a set day and time pick up. I send a reminder message about their pick up day of, with address, the morning of pick up. I think your sign with instructions is a good idea. You could also text them on pick up day with those instructions. I may hold product for a day or so if they can't make the original pick up. Your refund policy should be public before you start selling, post on a page or word doc or website so they can review it before purchasing. I require the uneaten product to be returned within 24 hours for a refund. If they eat it, no refund. If they don't pick it up, no refund. My entire set of policies is in my contract, which you can purchase and download, if you'd like to have it to use right away.

Hi! Really anything that you have coming up, instead of just saying it outright, tell them you have a surprise. This works best when you know it's something they will really benefit from or something people have been waiting for. As an example, I often get asked to make lemon bars. So I might announce "a sour surprise coming later today!" in the AM and then in the afternoon post about the lemon bars being available.

For custom orders, I ask their preference and fit it into my available time slots, or assign a pick-up window for larger pre-sales with many clients stopping by at one time. Usually allowing 2-4 hours for a time slot, with a reminder text sent the morning of and 30 minutes before the end, for those who still haven't been by.

I am located on an isolated closed-gate military installation. We are permitted to run home-based businesses anywhere on the post, as long as we are cleared by the local agency. No one has said anything about the traffic, and it hasn't been an issue, as we have plenty of street parking by our home. Most homes have off-street parking by the garages, so those stopping by the shop out front are not taking up spots for my neighbor's vehicles. You do bring up a great point that the zoning and traffic may be a factor to consider, depending on your location!

Thanks for your comment! I would need to sit down with you via a call to chat more about your plans before I could suggest well-rounded names for your business. In the mean time, I would begin by first thinking about your ideal client, and what they would be attracted to. This might help narrow down some ideas. Then, make a list and start checking the DBA in your area, and/or trademarks, plus online, to see if they are available for use. Lastly, you can always contact a full branding coach who can help you solidify your brand from all aspects, so you don't miss a beat.
