Hey Miles! Love your channel! If you want to read more Minnie Bruce Pratt, you can find some of her shorter works in old issues of Sinister Wisdom (and I’m pretty sure they have a book/anthology of hers published under their Sapphic Classics imprint) :)

Ahhh this list! 🥰 Our Wives Under the Sea (and her short story collection salt slow) are everything!!! Her new book Private Rites is incredible too (out in the UK, not in America quite yet…) If you like Bloody Chamber, I’d recommend Kissing the Witch by Emma Donahue (speaking of queer (sub)text)! And White Cat Black Dog by Kelly Link hits similar notes too. Constantly searching for a book that gets me like Hill House…did you read the recent retelling of it that came out by Elizabeth Hand?

I just read a couple really good books (imo) that you may like..? I dunno, I just thought of them for some reason.. Here in Avalon, and The World Cannot Give. Both by Tara Isabella Burton. Both have kinda culty vibes. I loved the writing and her vocabulary. Here in Avalon is about a young lady who tries to rescue her sister from a mysterious cabaret that performs late at night on a moving boat. The World Cannot Give is about a young lady who attends a private high school (feels more like a college set up) and there are some weird things going on with the choir... that one gets kinda dark.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle was a 5⭐ prediction for me from the very first page... and it was!! It's an all-time favorite. Shirley is the queen of what I call "the quiet creep"... the horror slowly creeps up on you and keeps you just slightly on edge.. where something feels off but you're not quite sure what.. until it's too late. 😮

LOVED I Saw the TV Glow, I had already seen Jane Schoenbrun's debut We're All Going to the World's Fair and liked it so I was excited to see their next film and by god it hit so hard (plus was filmed in areas of NJ I'm from/have been to). If I were to add a summer horror movie rec I would say The Wicker Man (1973), which is a bit predictable and heavy-handed but the vibe is cool and the soundtrack is great

I Saw the TV Glow went so incredibly hard. I saw a screening and the director held a Q&A after. She was so passionate about it. The music in it was amazing. Alex G blessed it. I knew someone who talked just like Justice Smith in that movie so it felt immersive/believable in that regard. Longlegs ruled as well. Some Twin Peaks references sprinkled in

I just started reading a graphic novel, Ink Girls by Marieke Nijkamp. It's set in a fantasy world about a printer's apprentice, publishing, whistle-blowing, it's got queer rep and disability rep, and I'm so here for all of those things. It's amazing how much time it can take to get through certain graphic novels, because I spend so much time looking at all the details of the art/illustrations because it's so immersive.

OMG, thank you for admitting that "Stolen Tongues" sucks. I am in the middle of it and want to dnf it and I agree with everything you say, I am not even that sensitive and think everything needs to be own voices but this was yikes and the author's note honestly made it worse. Also: so repetitive, it was spooky in the beginning but then it was just rinse and repeat. Having an author insert as the main character was also weird, especially considering he is the only better developed character, I mean his girlfriend was such a non character he gets to save or whatever. Sorry, for the rant here but I always see people praising it and I don't get it, so it was nice to see someone with a similar opinion.

Stolen Tongues was the first book I read this year and I regret wasting my time reading it. The ending wasn’t even satisfying and there’s apparently supposed to be a second book but I didn’t see a reason to even continue the story. The twist ending was fucking dumb too. And it was so disrespectful of him to just mash up different native cultures and make one up while bastardizing actually culturally significant items and folklore when he could have written the story without it.
