Hey guys, my name is Mathew, I am 20 years old, and I do reactions on television shows, anime and live action. I am very passionate about fiction and narrative, and love to express my opinions and discuss ideas and theories about those stories. I have a film degree and want to use this platform to analyze and enjoy pieces of media that I have yet to indulge myself in. I am often joined by my friend Dace who is just as passionate about television. Thank you guys for watching, and any suggestions, ideas, or topics to discuss would be highly appreciated.
I gotta clear the air here with this, the headphones were bought for 100% satirical use, cause they look funny for videos. And they will be staying, because they are funny to look at.
Shylock business = loansharking business (loaning money at an outrageous interest rate) Shylock was a character in Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice." He was a Jewish moneylender. The stereotype of the "greedy Jew" goes way back.
"Cooze" is slang for female genitalia. It's a derogatory term for a woman. That's why his neighbor doesn't like it when Tony shortens his last name to that.
You love dream sequences? You're in luck because there are some phenomenal ones in this show, especially in the later seasons. The season 1 dreams are a bit more basic, but later they're extremely complex, and you'll have fun interpreting them.
Tony nicknames his neighbor "Cooze" since his last name is Cuzamano. Which must translate to "cooze in hand"? Lol A lot of the last names in the show have funny translations.
Sons of Anarchy is a more of a D-rated version of The Sopranos. It's just a crime drama. The Sopranos is a genuine work of art. You have to watch it a few times to really appreciate it. It gets better when you don't have to focus on the plot/character arcs. Also shylock just means loan shark.
Yeah SoA was one of those rough around the edges shows, solid with 4 and 5 actually being really good seasons for me, but not best on television or legendary level. Just from this first season I can imagine the escalation of emotion, stakes, and quality.
Surprised you liked the previous episode more than this one. College is pretty much the Citizen Kane of TV episodes, in the sense that a lot modern TV can be traced back to this, from the cinematography upgrade to the lead character brutally murdering someone. Some critics even consider it the greatest episode of TV ever. I personally think that the show has at least like 15 better episodes, but its importance is unparalleled. David Chase actually fought pretty hard with HBO for them to even allow the garrotte scene, which is pretty crazy to think about today, considering the types of things we will see on this show and other HBO shows down the line. Their primary concern was the lead character not being at least somewhat morally upright, and actually committing a cold blooded murder, but they relented and thus the anti-hero was born on TV. "Without Tony Soprano, there would be no Walter White" - Vince Gilligan
Ranking and comparing episodes immediately after viewing them is relatively new to me so I really gauge how much I liked something after digesting it for a while and this episode definitely hits harder after rewatching it during editing. It is utterly fascinating watching a show that essentially paved the way for the modern landscape of television, and that importance sometimes does not immediately come to me, just seeing how simple ideas and scenes that I take for granted today really changed the landscape back then. And then on a more personal opinionated note season 1s of shows rarely, if ever, REALLY impress me (as in being one of the greatest seasons in tv history or having one of the greatest episodes of all time). Middle seasons of shows tend to be my favorite because we have time to get to know everyone and then also look forward to a plethora of different storylines and directions those characters can go. Season 1s tend to be more set up for me (amazing, entertaining, and important set up but set up nonetheless). Comparing to my favorite live-action show of all time I can see this episode being akin to "Walkabout" from Lost, just with the immediate impact only a couple episodes into the show. My favorite professor in college David Bianculli has written many pieces on The Sopranos and specifically loved talking about how Tony paved the way for the modern tv protagonist during classes so I am genuinely so excited to see every single minute of this masterpiece.
One show that not a lot of people I’ve seen that honestly, I think it’s great is The Shield is about a corrupt LAPD task force loosely based off of a real life corrupt LAPD task force named CRASH in the 90s
When Charmaine told Carmela that she had slept with Tony but it wasn't for her, she was telling Carmela that she could have had Carmelas life but she didn't want it. In other words Carmela should get down off her high horse, and yes that was said due to Carmelas' hand gesture and the way she was talking down to her.
Jesus these two are perfect examples of Gen Z. Complete lack of emotional insight, poor contextual judgement, no social barometer, and a total lack of subtlety. Or is the Jersey in them?
10:24 it’s not the fact he’s embarrassed. It’s the fact talking to an outsider about his deepest, darkest secrets, and insecurities it is a no no among the mob and an easy way for you to get clipped 🔫. Yeah the doctor patient confidentiality thing yes but how does the mafia know She’s not gonna go rat on the witness chair? Tony tells things to her they don’t know what he’s telling her and makes them suspicious that He may spill vital information to an outsider he made an oath. Omerta code of silence means “this thing of ours” in Italian aka the mafia once you’re inducted, you have to follow rules you’re not even supposed to admit the existence of the mafia ‘Omertà’
The SAT's were out of 1600 when they did it (800 for the Math section and 800 for the Verbal), which is when I did it. They have since changed the scoring system and I'm not sure what the scoring system is like these days. EDIT : That's the SAT 1 I'm referring to. The SAT II's (subject-based) were a different story and grading system.
We are definitely going to ramp it up sometime soon, 100% for season 2 at the latest, just got a lot of moving pieces rn. Audio should be louder for all future videos, still figuring out the technical side to this. Appreciate the comment
