Nice work! Bassoon' timbre makes it sound so close to the original vocal version.❤ I'm a horn player... could you share your arrnagment so i can transpose to F? 😊
Very helpful information. Thank you. On the Zoom H4N, what angle did you set for the XY mics? 90 or 120 degrees? And other than the built-in XY mic, is there any particular mic you would recommend? I was half expecting a reference to contact mics, but now that I think about the sound field of the instrument, that wouldn’t make much sense. Again, nice work and good info. 👍🏼
Bonjour. Un petit commentaire de France pour vous dire sue j' aime beaucoup votre duo. La pique vous jouez représente un certain travail. Bravo pour vos interpretations !
Question. In live sound, it’s often a matter of Sound reinforcement; supplying what’s missing from the acoustic transferer sound. In a small to mid sized room, the body of the sound needs transmitting. Where would you say a good blend of 500hz and below is captured, without loosing balance of notes in that frequency range?
For that range specifically you can get a nice warm sound by pointing at the back of boot joint (closest to the ground and from behind). But of course the closer you get and more focused on just one area of the instrument you are the less balanced it becomes and certain notes will pop out and be out of balance. Being closer to the long joint pointing angled down at the instrument, (which I did in one of the examples) would be probably the most accurate for a live sound application
very well played! Do you know the Duos from Ozi "Nouvelle Méthode de Basson"? You can find e version for play along with all of the 31 Duos here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pN4o5JMtsEA.html
Hello Dillon! I hope you are doing well. I was looking up on how to record a high-quality sound of the bassoon and I'm so happy that this video showed up. Thank you for your insights on the Zoom H4N and the placement locations. What are your thoughts on Zoom camcorders the Q4N or the Q8? Do you prefer recording videos on your iPhone?
Rittika Gambhir yeah the quality on your phone is gonna be a lot better than the zoom’s and you have the ability to put it in a different place than where you set up your mic. The mics on all those will be great though
Great video, thanks! And it's even more entertaining to hear a bit of my Orchestral repertoire study on 30:40! Btw, two methods (vol. 2-3) gonna be available via Accolade Verlag soon. Btw, I recorded all the studies using Zoom h4n
Found this really helpful in terms of mic placement. But was a bit surprised to find you advocating using the H4N Zoom as your mic of choice. Do you believe this is better than an equivalent priced large diaphragm condenser? What about the cheaper H1N? Is there a difference in audio quality as opposed to extra features? Thanks. Andy McWilliam.
Very well played! Bravo. If anyone would like to play duos by Ozi, here you can find the 31 Duos for play along: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BB5Gl3dHlkA.html
I actually did all the sound recording and mixing in Logic, and then “lipsynced” the videos and edited them in Premiere. The videos I shot and recorded in a day but I’d been working on the arrangement and audio on and off since the fall
Awesome phrasing and a top level and delighted moment of music performance. I have listened to all your videos during this quarantine. Dillon, there are many words to describe the quality of your sound: sweet, round, deep, noble, mellow, clean and smooth. That´s the result of a huge amount of practice, mind concept and musical thinking! Congratulations!...I know a lot of people consider what I´m going to ask you, impertinent and no polite, because this wonderful tone it´s just up to the performer, but, I´m really curious about your set up...from your type of reed until your bassoon. I´m sorry but I´d love to know about the tools this wizard uses to do his magic, beyond his practice work, thinking and talent!
Thank you so much for your comment, I really appreciate that you watched and enjoy my videos. Over the years my setup has evolved, but I believe almost all of my videos except the very earliest ones are played on my eleven thousand series Heckel. I'm currently playing on an older Heckel CC1 bocal with reeds I make myself (and actually sell also at dadtreeds.com - sorry shameless plug.) Thank you again for your kind words. Also, if you're interested a posted a new video last night if you want to check that out ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--E-gWBKTpbo.html
That's the performance parts (which we should have used but didn't have for this performance) there's also a score available, edited by Harold Griswold.
