just one of the best ensembles ever to play together. Stunningly wonderful music. Been listening since I was a baby. This, mahavishnu, metheny, and other Fusion artists of the time were my intro to music and shaped my musical taste and started my deep appreciation for true virtuosos.
Of the many concerts I have seen over the past 5 decades, "Return to Forever" along with "John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra" were far and away the best two performances. Two bands with extraordinarily and otherworldly talented performers, and two exceptional mind-blowing drummers.
So glad I grew up listening to these guys in high school -- on a great local radio station and my LPs. Just drank coffee out of a Return to Forever mug (from the 2008 tour)
I saw them at the Kennedy Center around that time. The energy in the air was palpable. If there's other lives, Chick, this one would be a hard act to follow!
Such great memories! Saw them at least 3 times, the 1st with Earl Klugh, (just after Bill Connor left, though wish I could have seen him, great player), at Soldiers and Sailors Hall in Pgh, then several times later with Al Di Meola (Stanley Theater if I recall). Everyone filled with incredible musicianship. Took several friends who were stoned hard-rockers and they were BLOWN AWAY! Became instant fans for life!
