What would happen if you mixed cernit, say the translucent one, with Fimo? Would it make it stronger? Would the baking time make a difference? I'm in the UK too and the Cernit range is minimal at best here and very expensive. Fimo is the cheapest and easiest one to get.

Thanks so much, I've always been a fan of sculpey for its variety of products. I was just shopping for new clays though and was indecisive between cernit and fimo. I think I'll go with cernit.

I painted eye's the very same way as you, they look marvelous and give the illusion that they follow you around the room. The only problem that I had was when I stored them in small airtight containers they tended to stick to eachother even though they had been drying for a minimum of two days!!! I now dust the eye's with Talcum Powder or corn starch before they are stored away, just wipe off the powder before using the eye's. Thank you for your video, hints and tips... BIG THUMBS UP 👍😷👍

I've asked several people why my sculpey figures crack with time and they told me it doesn't. However, I have a crack on each of my sculpey sculptures. Thank you so much for this and for confirming the experience I also had. I've recently switched to Fimo to test it and appreciate you doing this. I've never seen the other brand of clay and will have to look for it.

Well of course your sculpey broke during baking, aluminum bends easily when heated up, not to mention that a single twisted pair of aluminum is inadequate to hold that much material you've put on that sculpture. :D Sculpey is for modelling, so it tries to keep it's shape and volume as much as it's possible during the baking process. Make an armature frame that can take some weight, and it wont crack. (Edit): it is also worth to note that Sculpey is much better for painted minis, since baked Sculpey has a much more rigid surface.

If it begins to smell like chemicals in the oven, then either the baking time is too long or the temperature is too high. From my experience,for thinner claypieces like maybe 3 cm, 15 min baking time is enough. For thicker pieces I would use 30 min, but never baking over the max. temperature.

You can save your brush by wrapping it in tinfoil after you're done. I use a paper towel to squeeze out the excess resin and then wrap the brush a ferrule up with the tinfoil. The resin remaining in the brush won't cure and your brush will stay flexible for your next use.

hello, sorry for late answers, life and kids take the time these days. sculpey is very good for details but is very weak as a material, in time if the sculptures are medium to large they will deteriorate very badly, my older pieces went to the dumpster due to massive cracks. With cernit I have had zero issues, only thing that is very important with this brand is the preparation stage, kneed it well, I mean when you think it is ready, keep playing with it for a bit longer, that will ensure awesome pieces!

@TheEdgeofClay
@TheEdgeofClay 2 года назад
as long as you stay within the same temps the re-baking does not impact the clay from what I can tell so far, I have baked pieces 30-40 times, depending on how much details I kept adding, but stay within the temps recommended by the manufacturer.

Hey, I got Cosclay Sculpt in soft gray and it works great. It does not appear to be as soft as your clay either. It is more firm than it looks from your video. It also does not break like your clay did. That clay you bought looks terrible, you should show that video to cosclay and ask them to replace it. I had to try hard to break mine after baking it. I kept bending it back and forth very hard and it only finally broke from it heating up with friction. I made a spiral and a few other things to test it. I recommend retrying Cosclay but get the gray sculpt kind. You definitely got a bad batch there. Glad my first experience was not like that or I probably would never have bought it again. Hope that is helpful!

started with ur comparson video, and flipped to watch you scuplt this goblin when you showed the female goblin, was interested in how you made her stand without a platform, I tell ya its not an easy task especially for person like me when it comes to working with the colored polymer Clay's its different cuz of the smearing of the colors in hands, but some I saw they don't get much smearming, how I don't know me man hands like a rainbow, imsa have to stick with super Sculpey and juz paint it after, but hope to see you make more videos, ill sub to help out

You wash your hands in-between colors, always work with the colours from light to dark. There you go, no more rainbows. To make the character stand it is a two factor thing, armature in important and bake it with the feet on flat glass, do not touch it or attempt to remove from the glass until it is cooled 100%.

you know i was watching ur other video comparisons of which polymer clays more durable, I decided to have a look at ur Ch, and found this hand's video. Been having a tuff time making the hands with like Fimo, Sculpey, you know the colored clays, gets sticky and hard to keep its form, ima going to have to try like ur doing here, also the head on the chin part, the only clay I don't have a problem with is super Sculpey original I can work it without losing the form hands no problem, the head comes out like a head chin easy, it's just the color clays i been finding difficult and I bought a bit too much LoL but I started to use it after well 4 to 6 months some is crumbly, etc, any tips I don't want to throw it away and thank you for the hand's video putting it one glass seems better to sculpt the hands. one more question that wire you made is a good idea, you be able to bake the hands-on that wire hand holder without them getting stuck on the wire?
@TheEdgeofClay
@TheEdgeofClay 3 года назад
Ofc you can bake them on al wire without them sticking. Just keep the wire straight where you attach the hands, and don't pull, twist to disconnect them. Mix the crumbling clay with so liquid clay and have fun kneading. 👍

I was a kickstarter backer for Cosclay and it is great stuff and was from the beginning. He makes some bad points in here including saying it has a premium price. It doesn't. You just have to buy it in 1/2 pound+ packs. When I do the math compared to the clay I usually buy which is sold in 2 ounce packs the prices are better on Cosclay. 1/2 pound of Cosclay is $9.95US to get 1/2 pound of my normal clay in 2oz packs comes out to $11.96US. Now neither of those includes shipping, taxes, fuel cost to get to the store etc. just base price but Cosclay comes out cheaper overall. - Heidi

@BlueKungFu
@BlueKungFu 3 года назад
@@TheEdgeofClay No it's not what the manufacturer recommends however polymer clay only burns if the oven is too hot, not with the length of time it bakes for. I always bake my clay for two hours, as do many professional polymer clay artists. I have never burnt the clay, not once.
@TheEdgeofClay
@TheEdgeofClay 3 года назад
I get you and it probably is an ok practice for making beads and stuff, i would not recommend that for sculptures as you are going to bake it multiple times, not against it, just do not see the point outside of specific 1 time bake products.
@BlueKungFu
@BlueKungFu 3 года назад
@@TheEdgeofClay I don't make beads, I make sculptures. It is especially important for sculptures that they are properly cured or else they will start to crack & break after a time. If your polymer clay is cracking or breaking it means that it has not been baked enough. Fimo professional is incredibly flexible & strong once it has been baked long enough. If it's breaking like it did in your test, it's because it hasn't been baked long enough. Run your test again except this time bake it for 2 hours & you'll see the difference.
