Hotel was initiative of Walter Collins Hardesty, Sr. (1879-1935) and wife Anna 'Annie' (Haines) Hardesty (1881-1931). Interestingly, their son Alonzo Homer Hardesty (1912-1955) would in 1943 marry Edith Hall (1913-2012) ... who had been Auditor at a SC radio station. They had three children.
Yes ! I saw the documentary a few times. The pier was featured in some scenes, including Billy Joe Royal's original video version of his song, 'Down in the Boondocks'.
Fascinating history, it would be very interesting to see old pics from this place. This reminds me of a historical site in Eatonville, the Rainbow Room club. It was demolished in 2001. Many famous entertainers played there. It was a red brick building located within 1/4-1/2 mile west of I-4 on Kennedy Blvd. Seems to me there is no record of it on the Internet outside of an Orlando Sentinel article.
So you do know about this movie, kind of figured you might! The musical selection is curious, I don't know if I've ever seen anything like it in one production. Bridging from the R&B and beach music worlds, into the acid realm!
You may be the only person doing this kind of research and documentation in Central or North Florida. I'm a native and I've never seen anything like it... Great summaries, and I appreciate the concise shots.
Hmm .. YT censored me. Trying to tell ya that there is a nice tripped out mondo documentary about Daytona called "Mondo Daytona" (1968). Maybe you've seen it? If not, it's got some great slices of life from 1960s Spring Break (I had no idea - they were partying HARD then.) Also several excellent and varied musical interludes. I found it on Rarelust (easily found, free) ... Hopefully this comment gets through! Definitely a fan of your work, keep it up!!!
This is rubble that was exposed after the massive tidal surge/ erosion in November. Not sure if these bricks were from the Dana Marsh house/ studio (it is possible) ? This was the backside/ beach dune line of the property.
This is fascinating, amazing how this history would be forgotten. I bet those urns are indeed around, somewhere, even if buried in mud on disused land. Though of a much more contemporary history, I am reminded of Shirley MacLaine's involvement at some kind of temple in Flagler Beach. She supposedly said that the building, which was a dome-like or circular cinder block structure was the 'Cosmic Center Of The Universe' (at least as of the mid 90s). I can't find anything on the Internet about it now, but this was local lore back then. The building had group services of some kind offered..
There are two 'dome shaped' houses, north of Flagler Beach (Painter's Hill area). That might, possibly be the place ? I have gone to drum circles and healing gatherings there, in the late 1990's. The houses are on the west side of A1A, and can be seen from the road.
What incredible history, which contributed greatly to the racing culture of the state. That structure should have been preserved somehow! Hopefully many pictures or videos remain.
It is considered 'modern art', also 'industrial art' and/ or 'abstract art', a type of art that evolved through the late 1800's and through the current period. Perhaps, not your taste?
