She recorded this in 1939 and sang it throughout the war years 1939-45. This concert was 50 years after that and her voice is still perfect. And after that Dame Vera lived for another 25 years! Astonishing.
Not often does a song bring a lump in my throat, but this one does. I can only imagine what war years were like, but the hope, optimism and patriotism this song has is incredible and would have definitely lifted the spirits of those brave men who went to fight and sadly a lot didn't make it back.
"Please say hello to the folks that I know" .... "We'll meet again don't know where, don't know when". ~ Singing helped keep up moral in Britain during WWII .... and again 50 years later. ~ Brilliant !
Why do I cry to this? I was born in 81 and heard this in primary school. The war has never left my sense of tactile understanding after that. Kids in school today have no reference, no Grandparents who knew it. The smells of that generation and the cooking. The coal bunkers and single glassed windows. Milk men and paper rounds. Real cream sodas with a ball of ice cream in lemonade. Is it any wonder we have these issues in Ukraine now? Egos chomping at the bit to go down in history. Nationalism again? Seriously?

Now explain why this American cries every time I see such a gathering in Britain, for example, in the Last Night of the Proms, while "God Bless America" in the middle of a baseball game does nothing for me. It's a very inspirational song, so it must be the way it is sung. I think several things go through my mind. 1. When people sing God Bless America at a baseball game, it's 30,000 people singing individually. No one's got his/her arms around the strangers next to them. This song emphasizes "we." As does, for example, Parry's "Jerusalem." God Bless America emphasizes "I". 2. In these moments, the British express both toughness and resolve, and sentimentality. Not a half-bad combination, is it? Every now and then, I come back to this page to experience that once again.
Looking at the crowd .there this a young boy looking at his g/dad in awe his is singing like he never seen him sing before.because he is with his fellow soldiers. Celebrating this wonderful woman who meant so much 2 them during the war yrs.
