Welcome to my channel! This is where I upload videos about storytelling. My mission is to help everyone become a better storyteller by uncovering practical writing tips, story structure strategies and methods for idea generation!
If you’re interested, i would recommend this 1 hour long video called "The Super Mario Bros. Movie: REWRITTEN" by Charriii5. That dude's take on the movie's plot just BLEW my mind with how much more engaging and logical it was compared to the actual movie!
You validate The Killer, an aimless, disengaged piece with no drama to speak off, nothing to look forward to, not a single characters thicker than a sheet of paper, and shat on Saltburn, Ripley similarities aside, a scathing dark comedy about a psychopath toying with easy targets. Alright. That story journey of yours is still in its infancy, obviously. Best of luck.
@@StoryJerk Looking forward to a video where you demonstrate in an objective manner why something is or isn’t funny - either from you or anyone else. I found it very funny, and since it is indeed labeled as a comedy, one can only conclude it is not just a product of some twisted interpretation on my end. It was intended to elicit laugher and does so with aplomb. Ditto for the scathing part.
@@StoryJerk Comedy is an emotional reaction. Drama and character development are demonstrable structural characteristics. One would think you already knew the difference, having reached adulthood and all. So, again, feel free to detail where those are in The Killer. I wanna learn something new.
Comedy has structural components too, like set up and punch lines. The character development and dramatic conflict in The Killer can be traced pretty easily lol
I don't know if you ever read autobiographies/memoirs, but I would recommend these: Electroboy: A Memoir of Mania, by Andy Behrman; Left to Tell, Discovering God amidst the Rwandan Holocaust, by Immaculee Iligabiza; and Life and Death in Shanghai , by Nien Cheng-- all are excellent stories and very well told. Oh, also Famous for 15 Minutes, My Years with Andy Warhol, by Ultra Violet
Your points aren't wrong, but you know, literally every piece of media is gonna have flaws if you try to pick it apart. Don't take it too far or you'll end up just one of many people who forget how to enjoy things and have fun
@@StoryJerk it was suppose to be criticism, but I guess we can just dismiss responsibility as "triggers" I agree with everything else in your video, I thought it was really mature. Id be lying if I didn't say I am disappointed how you're handling this
Hey, I love the content. Only one suggestion, from the title of the video I'm not sure what you'll be talking about before clicking. I'd recommend a title like.... "How 4 Thrillers Raise the Stakes: Top 10 Tips for Building Excitement in Storytelling".
This is very helpful! I've been meaning to rethink the name and thumbnails for the videos. I'm on the fence as to how to approach. Did you find the videos through the thumbnail or a direct link?
Never heard 'the G word' before but that's what they're referred to in the book. Pretty sure they were Mexican too but I can't be sure because I fell asleep when reading it
Do you review foreign films? I'd be interested in your views on Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, by Pedro Almodovar, which is hilarious and also is one of the first films with Antonio Bandaras in it.
Of course! Love me a good subtitled film. Whenever I hear 'Perdo Almodovar' I recall the time I took a girl to see 'The Skin I Live In'. We didn't plan a second date lol
In storytelling you don't consider every opportunity as either taken or missed. You have to understand the audience's threshold for information both in the density and the time spent. Luigi movie that utilizes some flashbacks from the original would be an expanded opportunity
Of course, but you have to look at how the components work together in the final product. And if you're repeating a story beat - especially with a characters who is supposed to be part of an emotional climax - then it's fair to say the storytellers aren't doing their own work justice. But I fully support a Luigi spin-off, hopefully a TV Show on HBO.
I agree with others that The Super Mario Bros. Movie was not a good film. I watched it after all of the hype died, and I sat there with my girlfriend, and we were both like, "That's it?" The voice cast didn't make it enjoyable for me, either. There is no way for Seth Rogan's "Laugh" should be a thing for Donkey Kong. It was disgraceful to have established voice actors in the game of voice acting as villains, not voice Bowser. Kevin Micheal Richardson was Kamek. Even though he did voice a "villain," such a limited role was wild. I have learned that established VAs Cree Summer and Phil Lamar were doing "additional voices." Scott Menville had a limited role, too. I will admit this is being picky, but jeez.
I think Seth Rogan sounds like a hairy, stinky ape anyway so he's a safe fit for DK. But I agree that bg animation movies should be utilising real voice actors. Unfortunately, Phil Lamar isn't a household name even though everyone saw him get shot in the face in Pulp Fiction.
I loved it when I first say it a decade ago! It's all about storytelling and how universal they are. That's my take at least. Also, it's Tom Hank's best blackface role.
How Money Works was right, you are talented. Good video. I think movies recently do fail to have any real stakes or challenges for their characters. Especially if they're in a protected group. Not that I didn't enjoy this movie, but yea, I did pick up on some of what you brought up here. Anyways, Subscribed!!.....would be interesting for you to break down Jurassic Park or the JW movies. JP is my favorite movie.
Haven't seen JW but it looks just like Lost World to me: more of the same with nothing new. Maybe I should compare new entries in revived franchises? 🤔
Lovin the videos! Little tip, take one of your old videos audio and use it as a "master" and normalize your other videos voice audio levels against it. This video is substantially quieter than the others.
