In the time of the Lees, travelers to the Northern Neck found a warm welcome, a good bed and fine meal at Stratford Hall. Built by Thomas Lee in the 1730s, Stratford Hall is one of the great houses of American history. Four generations of the Lee family passed through its stately doors, including two signers of the Declaration of Independence, Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee, Revolutionary War hero "Light Horse Harry" Lee and his son, Civil War General Robert E. Lee, who was born at Stratford in 1807.

As to Lee’s racism, it was no worse than Charles Darwin’s. And it has been reported that when General Grant, own his world tour, was consulted by the Emperor of Japan, who was managed in a rapid modernization of his Empire, he expressed doubts about democracy, Leading the Emperor to prefer something more like that British system.

Good presentation. Despite a keen intellect, and a command of facts, Mr Guelzo seems incapable of truly understanding the mindset of a man like Lee, and of the Confederates, generally. This is no indictment of Mr. Guelzo, just an observation of not only him, but of almost all unionist-minded historians. We all have our shortcomings where understanding people and history are concerned.

I fear rule by the majority an a strong federal government. It’s a rational position to take now, let alone in Virginia in 1866.

Dr. Guelzo is an American treasure. Since Dr Guelzo likes sports analogies… he’s like the ‘85 bears of modern day civil war historians. Gallagher and McPherson are the Steelers and the Patriots 🤣

Making money on our faces. Killing USALL to keep theirs well powered. I hate it. I think they should destroy it. Instead of celebrate it. I know you can’t destroy these items but I truly hate seeing them they hurt so much. The Lee family huh. Some thing for nothing. We were here first you killer thieves. I will be so happy when we get you colonizers our and gone. Don’t worry we won’t enslave you or your offspring. We won’t brand you or whip you or miss educate your children

The American War for Independence was not "a struggle to be united", but that's okay. God bless the Lees.

Watching this video you could think that hunger in 1932-33 were caused by Stalin. It is not true. The cause of famine in 1932-1933 were challenging farming conditions and agricultural backwardness inherited from the Russian Empire. During the 19th century hunger happened every 4 years, catastrophic hunger happened every 10-12 years. For example, there was a hunger in 1891-1892, 1897-1898, 1906-1907. Almost 3 million people died without any hunger in 1889. It was natural mortality in Russia. So called “Holodomor” - hunger in 1932-1933 in Ukraine (part of USSR) was only the part of a hunger in several regions, including Hungary, Kazakhstan.

Fascinating. But while it snows in Uzbekistan, it doesn't snow that much! The soviet union covered a mass geography. Uzbekistan was a southern republic with long, hot summers and cold but pretty short winters.
