This movie has a hidden impact on a subconscious level that is haunting and addicting. I think Kate represents Jon Doe, the American citizen, just trying to live "normal" lives.
Its really funny that some people actually think that a fantasy movie has to have true reality. A film is a film, not to have true identity thats the trick to getting the audience involved.
Kate & her "homie boyfriend" are useless bureaucrats, the bad guys. Matt & Alejandro are warriors fighting utter degenerates, the good guys. Simple....nice & simple.
To experience something in the safety for 2 hours. To me a good movie is like a drug for 2 hours. Non fiction I enjoy, makes me appreciate my life more or motivate me to do something similar
Emile Blunt as 'Kate' was just horrific casting. What a mistake. It's not in the slightest bit plausible that a 105lb female would be leading a SWAT team busting down doors. If they would have made the character some sort of Admin type person caught up in something she doesn't understand and in over her head would have been so much better
A constant reminder in this and other movies/situations is how small groups of bad people can, and sometime do, defeat the large groups of good people even though the good people have every possible advantage in resources, money, and technology. Criminals and terrorist have always been limited only by their ability to do something, not their willingness. Times have changed. How much longer before we see a cartel use attack drones to defeat law enforcement. What use to be limited to the means of governments is now in the hands of terrorists and the kid next door. Used for good or for bad, technology is the ultimate force multiplier.
I think Kate could have been a stronger supporting character in the movie for two reasons, especially towards the end when Alejandro puts her point blank to legitimize the whole ops. First, she being moral and courageous would induce excitement for the sequel and a new challenge for the protagonist. Second, she has demonstrated courage and uprightness throughout the movie and overcoming the duress at the end would be a character pinnacle in face of death! This, to me, is the only downside of the movie.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but in the end - as far as I recall - the only reason they needed her, was because of her "Fed"-status (she was ATF right?), and they coldn't operate within borders without an Agent attached! ...so all that "we're prepping you to fight a real war" was pure BU*** ! All they needed was someone young, naive and WILLING to make a change, with a "fed"-BADGE ...and that's how they baited her! In the end ...she meant nothing for them all! They were using her to cover their @sses...
PS. I think that without that OST the movie wouldn't be half as (for lack of a better word!) ...menacing!... It's that (brilliant!) theme by Johannsonn, that gives you the constant impression something terrible is constantly around - like a "clock" ticking towards the next horrendous thing to happen and the worst part is that you never know when or why? ...you literally cannot trust ANYONE in this movie. >>> Oh! There you go! :) ..."The Beast"! ...
Benicio Del Toro has become my favourite actor in the last ten years. No "marvel/superhero"-NONSENSE movies, where "actors" are just reduced to steroid-junkies. I stil remember him from Singer's "The Usual Suspects" when he played Fenster, but once I saw the two "Sicario" movies and more recently I watched "REPTILE" I realized that no other actor could have nailed those roles, like he did. He doesn't need to show steroid-injected muscles to act. The scene when he nods off on a plane and has nightmares and suddenly wakes up ... (Emily Blunt watching him gasps) makes you understand this is not a guy you'd want to sneak upon even to make a stupid prank. PS. ..."Ahora vas a conocer a Dios!"...
Great film. Kate's role as a stand-in for the audience was pretty clear. Her character was also my only problem with the film. How, in the present day, could a mid-level Federal LEO be as naive as she was about the cartels? And how could Matt's luck be bad enough to draw the only pair of Federal LEOs who wouldn't bend rules to get the bad guys? Maybe, in a way, the Kate character not only reminded Alejandro of his daughter but was written to be a moral avatar for her - innocent and naive. Still, an entertaining and well-made film.
4:00: actually the inciting incident in The Godfather is the meeting with Virgil Sollozzo, a.k.a. “The Turk”, with Vito and Sonny Corleone; and where Vito refuses to deal drugs with the The Turk-- which leads to the The Turk calling a hit on Vito.
I disagree with the paradigm of winning the war over evil. What happens in most war on drugs films and is the general "no tolerance" policy of us law enforcement is not winning the war i.e. doesn't solve underlying problems. People like the drug lord will always have the power to do things like what happened to Alejandros family, because law and order approaches don't solve issues. That said I see Alejandros actions as a personal vendetta, not as winning a war.
Well , the entire movie was basically getting him to the cartel boss house. The death of Alarcon would just make room for another to slip in and take over , no war , or even major battle was won , so basically just Tuesday
Kate's perspective was like us watching the movie. Trying to understand what is going and why. The movie spoon feeds you a little bit each time as the movie progresses. This is to keep us intrigued throughout. I can't say if it fools the public since the movie is called Sicario for a reason and the movie does finally focus on Alejandro during the cop drive to the Alarcon hit. I'll just say it is a 2nd party perspective rather than be fooled.
I cant stand Kate in the film she is boring poor white trash that really is not a good cop at all doesn't have compassion for Del Toro's character and wants to take down small fish that she can control. She dont listen to nothing is always clueless giving you the feeling she is dumb and you can also see if her family was butchered that she would be ready to kill and handle her business so she is just messy in the film to me and comes off as a librarian playing a cop thats dumb so after watching this its clearer to me that this is what they wanted from her so she delivered nicely
