Thank you Wendi for the clear tutorial. Just curious as to how much you had to pay for the card to be printed? Was there a reason you didn't choose to have the card printed on cardstock? Have a happy day - Heidi
@WendiGratz
@WendiGratz 6 дней назад
I think it was $2 - $1 per side. It is on cardstock - just a fairly lightweight one. I went to the tiny copy shop around the corner from my house and they have pretty limited paper choices. I picked the lighter weight cardstock because it had the gloss I wanted for crisp printing. The heavier cardstock was matte. They had a heavy, glossy cardstock, but it was pre-folded and I knew it wouldn't print well over that crease. Most copy shops have a wider paper selection. 😁

I haven't tested them to be sure. I recommend doing a small test (test a few different colors - definitely including red since it tends to have the most colorfastness issues) to be on the safe side.

When it comes to tutorials I find people always use fabrics that do not show a clear right or wrong side or use the same fabric for both sides. I messed my first one up … :( Some baby bibs have a distinctive backside.

Does this fusible web gum up the needle? Or is double sided fusible a better choice these days?
@WendiGratz
@WendiGratz 16 дней назад
Heat & Bond Lite does not gum up the needle at all. (It's what I use for all my quilts.) Heat & Bond Ultra is not designed to be sewn through and it WILL gum up your needle.

@@WendiGratz I just recently bought a yard of steam a seam too. It was recommended by a lady at the quilt shop. It’s what she uses when she appliquéd sunbonnet Sue for a quilt. So I used it today and it is coming up my needle. Darn it. I had been using EeZ steam 2 and had no problem. I will have to try the Lite Heat n Bond

Can I ask how do you wash a quilt that’s got a cuddle back but cotton fabrics at the top ? What cycle do you put in your washing machine and do they shrink the same or does one pull more and distort? Or do you have to prewash everything, something I never do usually with an all cotton quilt?
@WendiGratz
@WendiGratz 22 дня назад
Cuddle fleece doesn't shrink at all, and I always prewash my cottons. I always wash on cold and have never had any distortion.
@rebeccamulkern1051
@rebeccamulkern1051 24 дня назад
So is the backing fabric , when you add it afterwards, not quilted at all? It seems that all the quilting is at the front, how do you secure the backing? Are you then quilting some sort of grid to include the backing, and if so doesn’t that defeat the QAYG method? Sorry, I’m a bit confused, but really like the idea of not trimming the batting at the seams
@WendiGratz
@WendiGratz 23 дня назад
The backing is quilted just along the seam lines sewing the blocks together. For the way I work, it doesn't defeat the purpose of QAYG at all. Quilting the individual blocks lets me do all the curves and angles and things that involve changing direction on an 11-inch square - much easier to maneuver through the machine than a full quilt. It also makes outlining the applique super easy for the same reasons. Yes, eventually I'm quilting the entire quilt, but I'm quilting straight lines 10 inches apart, which are pretty easy to zip through the machine. I can quilt a twin-sized quilt in less than an hour that way. It's way faster and easier than the usual method of joining QAYG blocks which can involve bias tape or clipping away batting or other fussy things I don't enjoy. :-) So basically, I developed this method to use the best parts of QAYG and traditional quilting. If you don't want the denser quilting in each block and you're only going to stitch in the ditch around the blocks anyway, then I definitely recommend a more traditional approach.
@rebeccamulkern1051
@rebeccamulkern1051 22 дня назад
@@WendiGratz I get it, you get the hard quilting out of the way first by using this method, I like it as I don’t like the sashing you need to add with the usual QAYG , I’ll definitely keep this in mind when I’m ready to try QAYG, atm I’m still able to do a dense but grid like quilting with my machine the normal way, and thank you for taking the time to explain it

I learned the tape trick several years ago when making tape was 5 for $1.00 😅. My sewing machine needle isn't crazy about it. What machine are you using?
@WendiGratz
@WendiGratz Месяц назад
This machine is a Pfaff Lifestyle which they don't make anymore. My current machine is a Bernina 710. I think it's the tape more than the machine that will be a factor. I've used scotch tape and painters tape with no needle problems, but the painters tape is easier to pull off. The scotch tape tends to sliver.
@DiannaAtherton
@DiannaAtherton Месяц назад
@@WendiGratz I agree about the painters tape. I also use the 2" wide for marking a 2" border. Love that stuff. I also have a pfaff222e. My mother bought it new in the 70's. I just dropped it off for repair. A belt. No biggie. I would love a newer PFAFF and serger. They are so nice in design. Ferrari of machines

I wonder if I could buy a quilt and then stitch through it. I just want to stitch, not make a quilt.
@WendiGratz
@WendiGratz 2 месяца назад
You can absolutely do that! It's called a whole-cloth quilt. Just buy any fabric you like and layer it like a quilt - front, back and batting. Stitch through all the layers and bind the edges. When I do this I like to use the design on the fabric to guide my stitches - stitching along stripes, for example, or around motifs.
