When I was a kid in the 90s, there was this kids show on PBS called Kino's Storytime. It would start with this orange puppet popping up from a white background, introducing the show, and winking. It freaked me out every time. The dilemma was that I never new when the show was going to start so it would just immediating start with that without warning. I had nightmares about it. If puppets freak you out than I recommend looking it up as there are full episodes and clips online. It really fell out of the zeitgeist as there's not much information about it, despite having been on the air for a good five years just prior to the popularity of the web.
