The Baseball Performance Lab team of Micah Gibbs and Liam Mucklow provide data driven insight analyzing all different aspects of hitting performance. The BPL studies the Bat, the Hitter, and how they both work together to a level of detail that has never been seen outside of a university lab. Join them as they dive into the weeds on a wide variety of topics and see if they can decode performance using Force Plates, 3D Motion Capture, Launch Monitors, Bat Sensors, and just about anything else they can get their hands on.
Thanks for the great information!!! Wouldnt batters be able to incorporate different techniques depending on which bat style they like? Example=throwing the butt end at the ball, dragging the handle etc? Im a huge golf fanatic and people never talk about this aspect of golf clubs. They act as if everything should be end loaded and every body Centric. I think just like in little league most golfers would benefit from a balance club vs end loaded.
When we played in college we would hold a bat straight out parallel for 30 seconds. If our arm shook at all in that 30 seconds we mercilessly rode each other and called that dude a Punch and Judy. 😂😅
Hi Micah,I am both,Top Tier and Michelle John in the below comments....:-) Thank you for providing BPI numbers as you are the only manufacturer to do so. I have learned a great deal from your videos! We recently bought your Marucci Echo 1 piece 33/23 based off of the numbers you posted below. My 13 yo daughter plays 14U club softball for the NJ Bat Busters. While not a "BIG" girl at 5'6' and 130 pounds, she hits with power with very good mechanics. In the past,we chose bats simply by feel and how they swung to her. In 12U, she used an LXT and an RXT IN 31/21, both very balanced by feel. At 14U we had the Mantra in 32/22 and a LXT IN 32/22. The Mantra was surely end loaded, but, she handled it well and loved it until it broke. RU-vid would not allow my full paragraph,so,i have added the rest in a separate comment.
My son is 5'3 11 year's old is a power hitter He uses a 31 -10 All aluminum War stick Bonesaber.. I want him to switch over to a composite But now you have the Cat X and the cat X connect.. Could you please try to lead me in the right direction even if it's a video to watch so I can get him a bat... I don't want to spend all this money and get the wrong BAT !!
This guy in the red shirt is not good! He keeps talking over the guy in the gray, which doesn’t allow him to answer the questions. Just tell the guy in the red to stop talking and listen, so we all can learn.
Video would be better if the guy in the red shirt didn't cut off the guy in the grey shirt, every time he was asked a question. The guy in the gray shirt is getting cut off halfway through his first sentence.
Tell tale sign was the bat wrap around the head when loading. The front leg is a symptom. Bat wrap is the disease. The hands at loading too far back from the axis of rotation at foot plant is the real issue.
Hello, I just saw the 41 second video for the echo and echo connect fastpitch bats, C’mon .the next two videos for the bats have no sound. You guys gotta give more love to the girls and young Ladies and Women if you want to sell these bats! Please more lab test like the baseball bats. Thanks
Thanks for reaching out. Now that our Research Lab is back up and running you can expect to see more Bat Testing videos coming out this year including fast pitch bats!
Hello, can you guys do lab test on the fast pitch echo, echo connect? If you want girls to try something other than the Ghost and LXT. My daughter daughter would love to demo the echo connect in a 33-9 and give you guys feedback, cannot find anywhere to try them out in Virginia. The game needs bats that perform and don’t break. Thanks
This video is about CAT9 drop 5s. Does the CAT9 drop 10 and 8 bats have the same BPI curve as the drop 5s? For clarity, across all drops is the CAT9 one piece the lowest BPI and the composite the highest BPI?
The BPI curve is the same for -10, -8 and -5. The BBCOR line is the only drop weight where the Composite is actually the lowest BPI of the three bats (CAT9 Composite, CAT9, CAT9 Connect)
The Victus Vandal 30/20 is a 30 BPI The Cat 9 30/20 is a 33 BPI From the work we have done anything over a 2 BPI change would be considered a significant change.
The whole “composites are for bigger players” is so frustrating to hear. Logically it makes zero sense that a material has to meet some sort of PSI limit in order to out perform a material is that is more beneficial and more productive at lower PSI. If the aluminum is better for the smaller player then it will be better for the bigger stronger player if this logic is followed
In this case, the composite is for a stronger player due to the higher BPI in comparison to the CAT9 and CAT9 Connect. If this were BBCOR we’d actually recommend the composite to everyone. It’s roughly the same BPI and CoM as the CAT9 one piece and is great for anyone trying to maximize bat speed
Um? I think most of what u said was false. The hybrid is a more end loaded design and meant for power hitters, the full aluminum will also transfer most of the power of the swing to the ball but you feel it on the mis hits. Its not as end loaded because it's all made of aluminum so the handle is as heavy if material as the barrel. The composite is mostly for smaller contact hitters who want a big sweetspot with the ring in hands but it definitely takes away from power
The breakdown can be dependent upon drop weight and we’ve seen this through most of the market. In this case, we were discussing the drop 5 CAT9 lineup where the one-piece aluminum is a balanced design. Where it gets interesting and why the scale is so important is that the Connect (hybrid) is slightly more end loaded (1/10th of an inch) but a lower BPI than the Composite.
@@BaseballPerformanceLab Sure but maybe in your videos you can focus on the target groups. That bat is for some who will take care of it. Not just a 13 year old.
With limited information and data, it is difficult to provide an accurate recommendation for you but historically contact hitters have performed better with one piece bats, which is the CAT 9.
The connect will provide a little more exit velocity however if the bat is too difficult to swing, the contact rate will be affected. We would recommend the CAT9 and CAT9 Connect, so you can use a one-piece vs high velocity pitchers, and use the Connect vs slower pitchers. If that isn't an option we would recommend CAT9 and add in strength training and heavy bat training.
Awesome video! I love the science behind it. I'm trying to decide between the Cat9 and the Connect USSSA 31". 13 year old, slim player...great contact hitter right now but looking for more distance (aren't we all ;) ). Anyway, I worry about the durability of the Connect vs the aluminum when using it for multiple seasons in various types of weather (50degree to 100 degree through the year). Would the 1 piece last longer just b/c there aren't 2 different materials that would shrink and expand and different rates and sizes?
