My rule has always been if the character has to be a certain race for the character to make sense than do it. For example Luke Cage as a character has to be black because there are critical aspects of his character that revolve around him being black. Blade for example is a guy who happens to be black I don’t believe any of his character revolves around being black (I’m not the blade expert so I could be wrong) so I don’t care if there was a white blade for example. In a lot of these characters cases they don’t need to be a certain race so whoever they cast can be what it is. Why does Ariel character wise have to be white? It’s a mermaid. Why does Cinderella HAVE to be white? Would there be a geographical reason? Be mad if it doesn’t make sense not if “pushes a woke agenda”
I think what grossed me out most about all that kneeling and protesting was how phony I knew it was at the end of the day. I agree with the premise of Omar’s hot take those fields are important to people, they should encourage their children to pursue them, not just STEM. However, we can’t ignore the reasons behind why STEM is often prioritized. There are significant socioeconomic factors at play: many families encourage their kids to enter STEM because they want them to secure stable, well-paying jobs, taking a more reliable path in life. Anyone who’s been to school knows that those in arts or creative programs, pursuing their passions often have the financial privilege to do so. They can afford to take those risks, while not everyone has that luxury.
We can acknowledge that but we also have to get rid of some of these stigmas and narratives. People in these other fields make good money and livable wages. The path may be longer and you may have to be creative but the arts don't guarantee that you'll be broke no more than STEM guarantees you'll be rich.
