There is a LOT of incorrect physics in this presentation. The most egregious mistake is the description of the plasma frequency. It has NOTHING to do with electron recombination. Plasma oscillation is the interplay of Coulomb and Newtonian forces, characterized by a classical model that was developed by Lorentz and Drude over 100 years ago. This plasma frequency describes the ability of mobile charge to respond to a time-varying electric field. A plasma frequency would exist without ANY electron-ion recombination. Aside from affecting the steady state plasma density and a negligible amount of damping, recombination is almost entirely irrelevant for describing the frequency dependence of radio wave propagation. There are plenty of other misconceptions here, but that's the biggest one.
Do you think your software will work on Linux Mint 20, 21, or 22? What changes in your Xubuntu installer would need to change to support these LM O/S Versions?
I.have been watching ATV via The Internet.....I remember the Mount Wilson antenna farm.....W7ATN.....and TV channel 2...4...5...7...9....11...and 13....and the uhf 22...28....34.....40...and 52....58...was there... must of the L A area radio stations..are there too.....also the space stuff....i vistit I when was child and a teen....growning up in L A in the 1960s and 1970s was great 😃👍
the question is to use that project tu special use, or concrete use, to arrive to there from europe with wery simple radio device and turn back to europe with some 40 km of margin of fail.k.
This pretty much looks like what I already get baked into my Flex 6600 or 8600 without all of the extra cables and connections. Correct me if I;m wrong.

I was at the Arduino presentation right before this and wanted to stay for it. Wish I had, but time was short and we had to "make like a tree and get outta here." (what movie that from?) -- but the LICW presentation, just listened to it and WOW. Great job!
SSOP, TSSOP chips, no problem. Resistors and caps no smaller than 06xx also no problem (NO 04xx PLEASE!!!!). I've soldered 0.5mm pin spaced parts, and could probably do 0.4mm if I skip my morning coffee. I do need the bino microscope I found in the trash at work years ago to inspect my work, and my father's coke bottle closeup glasses he used to use for his work (he was a diamond setter making stuff tor Tiffany's).
Hello Andy! Thank you for including and mentioning wfview (26:30). Yes indeed, wfview can run as a server on a Pi which can then be accessed via a remote computer running wfview for remote radio control, audio, spectrum, etc. We support many older radios, although the feature set varies considerably. Our website is easy to find and we are always pleased to hear from linux users. Ham Radio is the Original Open Source hobby, and people like Andy Stewart are keeping that flame burning! Thanks again! --E de W6EL
PLS respect QRP ... frequencies of **.060 and above are by ARRL gentlemen's band plan intended for QRP use. POTA and SOTA stations that are QRP are very welcome. SOTA stations especially carried everything in and up, and are both power and antenna challenged. Give them a chance!
Saudações DXistas. Ouvia muito a Voz da América em português para o Brasil. Nos anos 70 e 80 em Ondas Curtas (SW). Época de ouro nas transmissões internacionais. Saudades daquele tempo. 73'.
Thank you DARA for these videos and the RU-vid channel. This is great for new General Operators like myself. I will be watching the recent uploads this weekend. de KM4MMD
This is fantastic! Thank you for sharing this information and for creating and maintaining your Linux distro. I am a long time Linux user and I have been a General Operator for 11 months. I love this hobby. I am going to install your operating system on a laptop today and put it to work. You have given me a good weekend project. Thank you DARA for all of the videos that you have uploaded. I will spend the day watching them. I have never been to a Dayton Hamvention. I hope to next year. 73. KM4MMD
Missed coming to Dayton this year. Missed dearly Carole Perry's Youth Forum and the excitement that it brings to many at Dayton. Congrats to all the presenters. Great presentation about YOTA. You did Neil proud. Thanks to Icom and Ray supporting your efforts! 73
Could not make the hamfest this year. Miss Carole Perry's Youth Fotum. Love the enthusiasm of this young man. Great example of a future leader! Job well done!
Interesting topic but not very edifying. Also, the single biggest challenge to getting on 160 is receiving by far. Mobiles can work dx on 160 with .5% efficiency but if you can’t hear them you can’t work them.
Temple Texas (Bell County TX) was hit with a Tornado yesterday evening. The high winds here in Belton TX about 5 miles south of Temple, destroyed one of my antennas.
Two big problems with Parks On the Air, 1. There are no city parks included which is dramatically limiting the number of activators due to travel time/number of parks and it also dramatically limits the number of non-hams, especially kids who see it( probably excluded 99% of the potential vissiblity). If you look at Houston all the parks are in the middle of nowhere (I live in Houston) and an 1hr+ drive for most hams. 2. QRP limits the number of hunters because there are so few activators because of #1 and unless you have a Yagi you can't hear them (I stopped hunting because I have wire antennas and can never hear the activators). Sorry, this is going to die if you don't fix #1. Note, I have over 50 activations.
I call absolute BS on your point #2. To date I have 475 successful activations out of 475 attempts. All of them have been QRP, 10w SSB or 5w CW. It's never been a problem getting a pile up answering my calls.
I noticed when I was running QRP I always got the same hunters. If watch a bunch of K4SWL CW activations on RU-vid (I used them to help learn CW), about half the hunters are in almost every video. When I switched to 30W CW I the number of contacts increased along with the diversity. You have to have the "gain" somewhere, either the receiving antenna, the transmitter or the distance (see number 1 fix this one), simple math.
The city / county park issue has been addressed numerous times. The POTA database is maintained by volunteers. The sheer number of local parks combined with the fact that there's no source for a list of them makes it simply impossible. There are 10,610 parks in the U.S. that are in POTA. Houston is one of a very few places with the problem you describe. You should be having a conversation with your TX state representatives about the park system before you pronounce a program that's growing 50% every year dead. Making contacts QRP with a limited antenna from an urban area is hard - POTA or not. I did it in the Pittsburgh area for a few years. It was a lot easier to buy a 7300 than to argue with physics.
Ditto: I have been active on POTA for three years using the FT-817 with a 66 foot EFHW 7,400 QSOs and counting. QRP is an exercise in the 'art' of radio.
Houston doesn't look that bad on the POTA map; are those parks in a 50mi radius hard to get to? I often hunt POTA by going to a non-POTA local city park as it's less noisy and more space for antennas than my home lot. So city parks aren't totally out of the picture, although I agree it would be great to have them included.
4:38:13 If I knew my mug was going to be thrown up on the big screen, I would of probably made more of an effort to show up to a recorded forum that I was going to watch later. Why sit in a room and be power pointed to death when I can watch later at 2x speed and be more productive at Hamvention. I won't put my rebuttal here as it's not the proper place, but even if I was sitting in that forum, I wouldn't of been able to defend myself to give more explanation.
Hi Tom, There was an issue with this forum that we were unable to fix until about 40 minutes in because we were short staff and busy fixing other things.
As I skimmed through the video, picture of Martin, MFJ, made me sad because of the recent news that they are stopping production in their unit at Mississippi. Looking forward to more coverage of Hamvention 2024 online as I am unable to attend in person. I have clicked 'Notify me' for all the six live forums available on this channel. Not sure of how many I will be able to watch live because of difference in time zones. 73 de Jon, VU2JO
